It gets real warm, real fast, going through a tunnel on a steam locomotive. I've piloted a couple and it's a very cool experience. Obviously nothing like running a diesel.

One of the reasons why the Southern Pacific created the cab forward.

That, and crews were being asphyxiated in long tunnels.

It should also be noted the tunnel I was going through had it's top raised a good 8 feet higher than it was in steam days. (They didn't have auto racks nor double stacks back then) A lot more air and space in there and it still got hot instantly in the cab of the water heater.

Makes you wonder how folks on the steamers back in the day got through Moffat and Cascade without passing out.

Cascade Tunnel, 7.8 miles long, actually had electric locomotives that pulled the trains through. Steam engine and all at times.

You probably know about the door and blower system they use there today.

Other long tunnels sometimes the crews were issued breathing apparatus or more commonly they wet a rag to breath through and laid down on the floor of the cab.

Passed about 100' in front of my work on Monday. It was cool! Big boy was moving though. Not sure if they were running behind or if it always goes that fast but it flew by.

I talked to one of the engineers in Kinder. He said it take s four hours to heat up and go, and five days to cool off.

When I was living in Cheyenne, Wyoming between 1972-1976, there was a "Big Boy" locomotive sitting in a city park downtown. I don't remember the number.
Number 4004 is still in Holiday Park, according to Cheyenne Visitors Bureau website. It used to run between Cheyenne and Ogden, Utah.

Did people stop on the Huey P to take pics? I saw a picture that looked like a guy was standing in car traffic lanes on the Huey P Bridge taking a picture of the engine on the tracks of the Huey P.

It's packed up. It's 3 so crowds should be leaving. But if you do go. Go to the end of Tchopitoulas at the zoo and park and walk. The traffic on lake and magazine was really bad.

I’m surprised the climate change nuts aren’t laying down on the tracks protesting. Look at all that ozone killing shite coming out of that engine. I personally think it looks cool as shite

Yes it is. Took the kids to see it in Plaquemine yesterday. Would love to have seen it moving at full speed.

***LET ME BE CLEAR... I DO NOT CONDONE STOPPING ON A BRIDGE AND BELIEVE A LOT OF PEOPLE UNNECESSARRILY PUT THEMSELVES IN VERY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS ON THE HUEY P.***

that said...

YouTube - video of Big Boy climbing the Huey P. with footage from on the bridge

YouTube - video of people pacing Big Boy on the Huey P. making a very dangerous traffic situation

and it goes on and on
