re: Question for those who have been laid off

Reason I asked is I’ve been out of work over a year and have spent a ton of time with my son and it’s been great. Been doing part time work just to get over the boredom and have a little cash. You’ll find a job quickly I’m sure but enjoy the time off with tour little ones

All it takes is one interview to turn things around.
I got laid off a couple of years ago and kept striking out time after time. I got pretty discouraged around month 2. Month 6 rolled around and I still didn’t have anything, it was rough. Finally the stars aligned and I went on an interview and hit a home run and was hired within 48 hours. Persistence is key. There are many times I doubted myself, thought I’d resort to plant work in the end, etc.
I will say this though, I had to leave Louisiana to make it happen.

Did the same until my frustration was unbearable. Took my resume' door to door the old fashion way. 2nd place I stopped I was offered a job. Friends are a good source also. Feel for you, it sucks!

If you had a 10th grade education and was a meth addict with several felonies, and as many divorces, you could easily get a job offshore making 100K
You could get a job for a service company making that much money being away from home 9 months or more per year. And even then the Meth head might have issues.
If you’re working for a major, you’ll need a 2 year technical degree minimum or lots of years of experience and probably a few years as a contract hand first. Probably won’t break 100K initially without experience.
Money making in O&G is tied to willingness to put in hours, being a known quantity or having a unique skill set. Still, oilfield service is the surest way to make a great living without much education in Louisiana.
If you can get on 14/14 with a major, even as a contractor, the perks of being home 2 weeks per month can outweigh the time gone. Not really ideal with small children, though.

I got laid off in 2010 when the O&G market went to shite. I spent a month, driving east, and played every golf course from New Orleans to Destin. I called it my no reservations tour because I literally had no hotel reservations/itinerary and found places to crash as I went along. Met some really cool LSU fans, in Destin, and spent a few days on their boat. Best time I've ever had.

I'll get in all the family time I miss out on when I'm working. Take the kiddos to the parks and beaches and lakes, get some quality time with em. Go see movies during the day when the theaters are completely empty. Fix up some stuff around the house or start a project piece.
The key is to keep yourself busy so you dont dwell on being a jobless sack of shite. Call the contacts you hopefully made at your last job and see what's out there. If people like working with you they will find room.

I found out on Monday of this week that my job with the company has been eliminated.
Was just promoted a year ago to a regional manager position - hired my replacement for my previous role- and essentially hired myself out of a job in the long run.
Unfortunately this isn't my first time being laid off - but I sure hope it's my last!

Job market in BR sucks arse for advanced positions
Then you may have to move or take a less advanced position. My wife was in your position years ago and did the latter, and it worked out well for her. Good luck!

It's tough being out of work without becoming depressed. Little bit of advice. Try to find some grass cutting jobs or handy-man type stuff around your neighborhood to stay active until something good comes along. Sitting around all day looking for shite to do is no good for the brain.

Yeah, both times I was laid off turned out to be blessings in disguise. Bettered myself and my position in life both times.
I don't miss the stress of needing to find something to provide for my family though. That sucked, and it was really easy to get down and discouraged. I went over a month with hardly any responses from openings I responded to, then had 3 offers in the same week.

I worked for two companies that relocated. Both relocated to areas that I was not interested in moving to. The first job I had out of college, I loved. Great company, great people. Paid well and had great benefits. To be honest, if they would not have relocated, I would probably still be employed there today. It was close to my home town and everything was perfect.
Once they announced the move, I found another position in a different area and made a move. Second company only lasted a few years before they relocated then I went rogue and did not go back to Engineering. People thought I was crazy but in the end, it bettered my life and the life of my family
Make lemonade people.

It’s money and a job for now though. You people really have enough cash laying around to “take time off and figure yourself out”?

I’d be banging doors and taking folks I know in (and around) my industry to Lunch and staying involved with them.
My world is a little more old school rather than LinkedIn, etc.
As to responsibilities and job title, I could consider a different role at decent renumeration.
Unemployed = 0% of Current Income
Underemployed = Some amount > 0% of Current Income
Good luck OP

Same here.. Been 2 months for me. I'm just calling it vacation for the time being. Lots of golf and fishing.
Gotta keep the day drunks to a minimum though, Ha ha.
