Learn new things.

If you look at job descriptions consider if there is something they ask for you don't know. Learn it.
Find out what skills they want. Get down to it.

You must exercise. Get in prime shape. People really respond to that in the interview. Make damn sure your interviewing skills are good. Find someone willing to play interview you. Twice a week look over the resume.

What's your elevator interview?

Are your clothes ready? Shoes spit polished?

Is your car clean inside?

When you get your shot be ready in every way.

There is temp work for accountants. 1 to 5 months good pay and keep your hand in.

Are you up to speed on SQL?
Haven't used it in years? Install it and make up a little system.

Whatever your trade, go bust into joints and introduce yourself like a man with a sack and let them know you're looking for a new job and tell them why you'd be an asset. Just taking that step to walk in proves a lot.
