Maybe not here but I met my first IRL shut down person two weekends ago. This chick is loaded and works as a pharma rep. Her husband is a stay at home dad that she supports. She just casually mentioned how she knows more than anyone else because she works in the medical field and how we should just stay shut down. In her words, it isn’t so bad because the government is taking care of everything and can just keep sending people money as needed and that she was fine with it as she has plenty of savings.
There was so much dumb in her statements I just made the conscious decision to not even try to explain it all to her. I just walked away.

It's not trolling. It's simple sarcasm and you should be ashamed that you didn't pick up on it.

We're supposed to elect Michelle Obama President first.

That seems to be a recurring theme with the keep it shut down people
They are not affected and the situation has probably improved their quality of life
frick everyone else

I'm serious as a heart attack. I really think there are so many timid people out there that we shouldn't go back to normal until no one is getting sick any more.
IMO, it's similar to the mindset about flying after 9/11. A good number of people said, I'm not flying ever again, but you know what? Time healed things and the necessity of life continued on and people went back to flying.
The same thing will happen here. No one is going to wear a stupid mask every time they go out for the rest of their lives. No one will sit at home for the rest of their lives.
But for now, you have a lot of scared people ( brought on by CNN,etc) that really don't want to go out. Ever.
My in-laws, live four hours away. They used to visit 4 or 5 times a year. They've told us, since we are still working and out in public, they potentially may never feel safe to come visit again.

The people who want this shutdown to continue are the same people who pretty much do not know the differences between shut down and normal life. I have discovered there are many adults between the ages of 30 and 50 who just want the government to take care of everyone. It is not moderate lefties but the far left progressives who were so desperate for Bernie. I mean Bernie? The guy looks like he will keel over at any moment. But they would have taken the Hamburgler or Wizzo the Clown if they ran on the same platform.
Socialism...it is just a milder form of authoritarianism.

That will never happen. It hasn't for the entire history of the world to this point.

I was actually just thinking about this with a friend of mine. He’s all about keeping things shut down and vilifying anyone who wants to reopen without a vaccine.
He’s also a graphic designer who is now working full time from home and getting a lot more free time to enjoy his day.
I don’t think he’s consciously making the connection, but it is interesting to me that he is being extra cautious when literally nothing about the shut down has been negative for him.

Do it in stages, starting when we have about 2 weeks of level or ideally downward number of cases. Then continue to reopen gradually as long as cases don’t significantly spike back up.

My wife is becoming like this. It’s sad and scary. I’ll be honest: I don’t know if we’ll make it if she’s like this forever.
She just canceled some walking plans we had with her parents. We haven’t seen them in two months. Alabama is mostly open again, and we were going to Oak Mountain (a state park) to walk an easy trail with the kids. It occurred to her that her mother would have to use the public bathroom, and that freaked her out. Covid could be in there! So she canceled.
It’s lunacy.

I don’t know any keep it shutdown people but I also don’t know anyone who wants the police to discontinue the roadblock that keeps everyone who doesn’t live here from getting into town. At this point I expect almost anything.

I think this is the process until vaccine unfortunately.
The vaccine won’t do anything until VERY long term A good percentage of the population won’t get the vaccine when it comes out.
1. Pregnant women
2. Women planning to get pregnant in the next year.
3. Anti vaxxers
4. People that don’t yet trust the new vaccine. (I will probably be one of these). Will the vaccine cause other health issues later that is worse than catching the virus?
We need to just get over it. You will be exposed to people with the virus whether you think you’re safe or not. The virus is not going away.

Well, the plan is to crush the economy so Trump looks horrible and keep the Biden “touchy feely” thing quiet so Biden has a chance against trump.

What really pisses me off is that we've had infectious viruses for ages and we've all mostly gone about our business. Now we have a virus that got instant notoriety, initially through veiled media reports from China, and it's freaked so many out.
If we categorize it as we should: it's a virus that can cause some people some issues, but largely is no worse than the standard annual flu, we can quit fear mongering.

The typical makeup of the keep it shutdown crowd.
1. Live on welfare and food stamps. These people refuse to work.
2. Retired folks
3. Well heeled people that are independently wealthy. Millions in assets much of which are liquid.
4. Facebook Karen's/Kevin's.
People that are on welfare and food stamps possibly due to this pandemic and can't wait until they're working again. These folks have self respect. Maybe they're disabled.

I only follow Louisiana’s statistics, and I have family both in public health and front line medicine here. There will be ups and downs in cases and death as people get back to moving around, but there won’t likely be second and third shutdowns.
They have to weigh the recommended mitigation measures against the willingness of people to comply. As cases go back up we may see more mandatory face covering rules and things like that, but it would be near impossible to get broad cooperation with a second shutdown.

You do realize that the Coronavirus isn’t the only negative or dangerous thing in our world right? Shouldn’t our decisions be made in maximizing good overall not just doing anything and everything possible to limit the spread of one particular virus. And one that will be more likely to make people a symptomatic than anything else.
