What is the best food to feed a dog?

Completely depends on the age, breed, food allergies, health issues, etc.

Best brands out there are Royal Canin, Science Diet, and Purina Pro plan. Ignore anyone who claims vets recommend certain brands for kickbacks, makes the dog sick, or whatever other crazy bullshite.

Dont' buy into the grain free fad. Numerous studies have linked it to an increase likelihood of cancer for various reasons.

As long as your dog acts normal, stool is normal, and they are healthy on exams, feed them whatever they like thats in your price range. We have 4 animals and they are all on different brands/diets specific to their health needs.

Depends on the dog IME. My rescues who are
Mixed breed mutts all eat/ate Purina Dog Chow. They all are (or lived to be) geriatrics. My pure bred FBDs eat Iams lamb and rice and Purina pro Plan lamb and rice kibble. All my dogs are living long healthy lives. Take it FWIW.

And I too am married to a DVM.

I fed Science Diet for the longest time. It is a good food, but I admittedly started it because the vet school I was working at sold it dirt cheap. I am talking less than the cheapest store brand cheap.

I now feed Pro-plan and have for 10+ years. I have never had a dietary issue. I have my lab on Pro-plan performance. It has gotten to almost $2.00 a pound ($1.79) I am thinking about making my own dog food with a primary protein source of chicken, turkey, or salmon. There isn't quite pricing parity yet, but it is close. I could probably make it for about the same all in cost but my time is worth something.

There was a big study that came out a few years ago that hit every news outlet, and it revealed a lot of expensive grain free foods were not as great as people think - some outright terrible.

Purina got one of the highest ratings, if I remember right.

I feed my dog this because I tried going to a lower cost food and it wasn't so good for her. I'm not saying food allergies but my vet suggested I should look into her food after a flare up of the poor thing constantly scratching and chewing herself.

Blue Buffalo is good but they’ve had a number of recalls over the years, which is why we switched off of it.

I think it greatly depends on the dog.

We take excellent care of our pups. I had Catahoulas for years, they did best on Ol’ Roy from Walmart. We tried everything and they liked that best and it seemed to work for them. They all lived ridiculously long lives for Catahoulas so I think it worked out. The youngest one died at 14. The rest lived longer than that.

My current pups eat “Call of the wild”. Anything else doesn’t work for them and makes them sick. I think most foods are suitable but you have to find out what works for your pup.

My vet said avoid anything with the word "Blue" in it. For whatever reason they're notoriously terrible for dogs. She also said don't fall for the grain free schtick. Dogs need grain and meat.

My dogs get a food from Muenster. My older dog has gotten a little thinner in her old age so I'm getting a bag of the salmon base and a bag of the chicken base. The salmon base is higher fat and higher protein content but grain free. So it gets cut with the chicken that has the grain in it.

It is not. They spend more on marketing and branding than any other company by far. They have had numerous food recalls and have had lawsuits filed against them for false advertising. They also do not back up their food with any scientific research. Hills, Science Diet, and Purina pro plan all back their food with scientific research. Which is why most vets, like my wife, suggest these products.

Yes, every other major brand has had probably had a recall or lawsuit filed. But Blue Buffalo is the preverbal black eye in the dog food world.

Like it was said earlier too, Blue Buffalo was one of a handful of brands that were linked to DCM cases in dogs who were eating "grain free". The other 3 brands I mentioned were not.

Didn't know there were so many female vets out there. My vet is married to a vet and that's the only one I know of. I fed mine Pro Plan for years(Labs) but switched to Purina One and have had no issues. But I do sweeten it up with left overs from time to time. Seems like Pro Plan they eat it right up, whereas Purina One they eat a little here, eat a little there, but clean their bowl at the end of the day.

a high school buddy of mine is a vet and he says Purina pro plan, which is what I feed my dog currently. And, I don't bring my dog to him due to distance, so he's not trying to make money off of my sick dog. I would trust this advice before a pet groomer. Go to Tractor Supply; no one will F with you about the dog food you purchase.

Oh, who to trust? Actually vets who actually went to college to learn about dogs' anatomy, or a bunch of groomers and cashiers who probably barely graduated high school? Yeah, tough call here.
