Sorry for your loss. Family dogs are so oblivious to the real world and the insignificant shite humans do to each other.

All dogs want to do is make you happy and be your best friend.

I have to believe though that they don't think like humans in terms of life and death.. when they are ready to go, they let you know.. and then they are gone. Almost like a gift to us to pass the time.

Truly mans best friend. My husky is 9. I got her in college at 6 weeks old. When she goes.. I'm going to be a train wreck for a long time. The only comfort is knowing that I have given her the best life possible over 9 years.

Did the same for my black lab, Belle, back in 2011 (almost exactly 7 years ago).

Held her as she took three deep breaths and that was it. She was a great girl. Really was my baby. Took two dogs to take her place.

Hang in there. It gets easier, especially after you find a new best friend.

I also made the mistake of holding my dogs head in my hands as he passed. I thought I could handle it....I was wrong. Stayed drunk for a month straight after that. Now every time I pass Shenandoah animal hospital on my way home I get a lump in my throat.

Boxers are wonderful dogs and Roscoe is a great name.

Sorry for your loss.

You took care of him all the way to the very end. Good for you.

You did a good thing. So sorry for your loss but you were a faithful friend to the end.

quote:

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this — the last battle — can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close — we two — these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Sorry to hear about Roscoe, Chuck.

My German Shepherd was diagnosed 4-5 weeks ago with high grade lymphoma. He is on steroid treatment now, but we know it’s only a matter of time and we will have to make the decision you had to make today. It’s obviously something I am dreading.

It hurts every day, but hold those memories tight and it’ll help some.

I experienced the exact same thing 3 years ago and now I have a 15 year old Bijon Frizzy which will probably get the same treatment soon. I carry her down the stairs ea morning when she wakes up. You did the right thing IMO. They have continued to love you despite the number of times you whipped them and yelled at them. I think you gotta be there to hold them as they pass. I expect we will see them
In heaven somehow.

Yup - lost my BF, 12 year old Golden Retriever July ‘17. It was time, yet so very hard. I miss my big boy.

I am very sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing.

I got my first dog as an adult two months ago. I’ve already had the thought of how terrible it’s going to be when he dies. It’s been two months and I’d lose my shite if he died. Can’t imagine 10-15 years

I’m so sorry for your loss. We put our yellow lab down a few months ago. It’s
soul-crushing. My husband put on a jacket yesterday morning-it still had her hair on it. I guess we will have those moments for a long time. God bless.

ETA Now I think more about her, and less about her death now. We had her euthanized in our home, so I walk past "the spot" every day.
