I get it. This month has a lot going on. I have a job similar to yours. Getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, and doing some exercise can help your mind and body handle the stress.

I very much relate to this. I’m a high school Sped teacher. It’s just so much going on this time of the year. Add in the fact that I have to go to Lafayette twice this week for graduation ceremonies and it’s overwhelming. I am very much the type of person who recharges my battery by being home. So I’m feeling very anxious and drained already and things don’t even really kick off until tonight. I keep trying to take it one day at a time.
And I know the TD loves to rag on us teachers but I’m not complaining because I’m a teacher. I’m complaining because I don’t do well mentally with a 1000 things on a to-do list and, unfortunately, that’s my life at the moment. But, I know that this will pass and things will eventually settle down.

My son got the Most Improved award list night at the tennis ceremony, that’s for inscribing the plaque.

Reading this post and seeing the world the past 3 years I believe people were simply mentally tougher in the past. I’m 35 so this isn’t some back in my day, get off my lawn take.
We have an entire month dedicated to mental health awareness now. Constant bombardment to go get help, to take mental health breaks, to be compassionate because you never know what others are going through.
All of those are good things, but are we going too far with the caring/emotionally supportive outlook? Would people, especially kids, benefit if adults and parents were less outwardly compassionate and less emotional?

And why the hell are you still coaching if you’re a tenured high school teacher?
Finishing out those contract obligations

My certification is in music. There’s 1 band teacher at each MS campus.

They're too busy standing in their circles at the grocery store

I can agree to that. With that said, I was chatting with my dad, who was also a teacher in my same subject area, and told him what all I had going on. His response was something along the lines of not having to do half as many as those things when he was teaching.
Schools do more and more for the students these days.

Do you have to be so involved in all those activities at the school?

I agree. It’s part of the every kid needs a reward and validation trend that’s been going on for the past 30 years.
But that’s what I mean, why does every grade and every sport and every club need a separate award and recognition ceremony? Why are there so many? Why can’t there just be one at the end of the year and be done. Maybe even segregate academics and athletics and be done with it. Hell, why even have athletics award shows at all?
Just my opinion but this is a huge issue. Schools should not take the place of parents and family.

Imagine if you actually had to work during all of this.
I’m not sure I follow. Are you suggesting the 9-4 plus being at a concert or sports banquet (set up, tear down, etc) from 6-9 is a cakewalk. I would gladly intensify the 9-4 portion if it meant I could leave after school and spend an evening at home with my wife.

Between fulfilling commitments until the year’s end and band duties, yes. I’m hoping to change that for next school year. There will be no more coaching.

Sorry but everyone is soft as shite these days. My ex wife thinks she has it rough bc she only has time to watch 2 hours of Netflix a night instead of 4. I remember my mother getting home from work and cooking a real meal EVERYNIGHT and then doing dishes and laundry and never complaining a lick. She got joy from doing and giving to others, everyone these days are selfish. Sorry bro.

I agree. People these days seem to feel like they are entitled to never feel sad or tired or struggle with life.
OP, count your blessings. You have it way better than most people. Not everyone can take breaks from their job and drink a beer or go for a walk. Some don’t have a job, some can’t walk or some cant have alcohol.

I agree. In my 13 years teaching, the end of the year activities has nearly doubled.

The world is different than it was a generation ago. Cellphones and email mean you are always at an arm’s length. The same applies for students. When I was a kid, I didn’t have to check my email or account for assignments. I didn’t have to worry about a standardized test for each subject.

Become an elementary school PE teacher and get your Ed.D. You get the same pay as an assistant administrator, maybe more. All the perks of education and none of the sucky parts. No paperwork, no extra hours, no shortened summers, no dealing with angry parents etc...
The dissertation sucks but it's like two busy years vs. the rest of your career.
