This month is like hell for me. Yes, it’s the end of the school year, but with that comes an endless stream of awards ceremonies, banquets, fine arts performances, graduation, and even a state competition on a Saturday. Of the 23 weeknights this month, I have an event on 12 of them. I also have 2 Saturdays where I will be working a total of about 27 hours.

Some people may be able to handle this stuff with ease, but not me. Add in the fact that Mother’s Day and my dad’s BDay are within the same week, and it just makes things crazier.

The only way I can make it through is by using some saved up sick leave. In the first semester, I started a thread about looking for a job at a middle school instead of high school, as that would alleviate much of the time spent. I would gladly take a pay cut to have more time with my wife, and time to do things I want to do.

I struggle daily during these weeks to not lose my shite. I constantly remind myself that I’m the only one looking out for me (aside from my wife, but we don’t work together, so that doesn’t directly ease my schedule).

I know there’s others on here dealing with shite. Maybe there’s a fellow educator that also hates this month as much as I do. My reward is a summer that lasts about 5-weeks. Rest assured, I’ve done the math this year and the number of 65+ hour weeks I’ve worked makes up for most of that time.

Again…take time for yourself. Take time for your family. Go for a nice walk outside while everyone else is at work. Drink a beer at a patio bar and people watch. Hit up the golf course. When shite gets real and you don’t take care of yourself, you will feel physical pain. I didn’t know that until I had endured weeks of torture. Don’t try to tough it out 24-7. Listen to your body, and relax.

Do what's best for you man.

I'm in strategy consulting and find it hard to put the computer down and stop working because there's always something to do, hell I'm on it now. But we aren't ER doctors and nobody is gonna be dead if I don't get that next deliverable out today.

There's a reason I'm 29 and have high blood pressure.

Nailed it. Personally, I stopped looking at other people in my profession. I don’t live to work, I work to live. Admittedly, I’m burnt out on my job and am trying to remedy that. I admire those that love what they do and can burn the midnight oil with a smile on their face.

I don’t know how you Teachers truly manage with only the 5-week summers, two week Christmas breaks, and the one week Spring Break.

Thank goodness you can burn through some sick leave!

To my non-educator friends,

The ones that are grinding harder than ever right now because it might be Layoff Season in our respective industries and the economy (I.e. new good jobs) is getting tighter - this Coors is for you…

Keep doing your thing. The American Dream is real if you put in the sweat. Save those sick leave days for others.

We’ll enjoy our spoils when we marry a trophy wife and are retired in our late 50’s (unless we die from a heart attack from stress first).

If you hate it and willing to take a pay cut, find a new job my friend. I know that’s easy to say and I’m sure you’re sticking it out to maximize your retirement, but a lot of friends who are teachers have left and haven’t regretted it. Get a part time gig or start a business and sub. Decent money in that without the responsibilities you currently deal with.

I hate to see others struggling with mental health and the daily grind, been there myself. Hope it goes better than you’re expecting and wish you the best.

No need to turn this thread into that. Every job has its positives and negatives. I’m good at what I do…I just don’t like it much anymore.

I respect the hard work that others put into their jobs. My friend has a stereotypical “desk job” and works from home 4/5 days of the week and goes 9-5. Ironically, we’d switch places with each other ASAP at the current moment.

Do your thing, buddy. I’m sure there are some perks to what you do that I would love to have, just as you’d take my short summer.

I’ve been on the hunt. I have a couple of things that could open up at the close of this year. I’m prepared for another year at my current school, but it’s not an option for long-term, as I’ll end up medicated and suffering PTSD

I look at our associates and I have no idea how they do it, Adderall probably helps.

We don't even have to push them they just have the need to be the first one in and the last to leave. I guess the real driver is only ~25% of them will make partner so they will do anything necessary to be noticed and not in a bad way. It was competitive 30 years ago when I was in their shoes but it is ridiculous now. I doubt I could have lived with the OPTEMPO they run at year after year. I try to tell my associates do good work and be in the office while the switchboard is open and when you have a deadline or ask to stay late and I will be happy but they just can't take the risk I suppose.

Stay in education if this scenario is hellish to you.

Don’t get into the private sector.

Good luck.

More details on this type of job/career? I like the ability to work at 1am. It’s my preferred time when it’s quiet in the world.

I remember your post from before.

You really can’t find a middle school job?

And why the hell are you still coaching if you’re a tenured high school teacher?

I respect the hell out of teachers and what they do. It is not an easy job and I cannot do it. That said, quit whining. Every job that does not pay minimum wage has its own challenges.

Remember this, the school system does not care if you are in that seat or if someone else is. They do not care about you. If you drop dead in your chair they will wheel you out in the chair and then replace you. After I realized that it made it easier for me.

Imagine if you actually had to work during all of this.

If you can’t mentally handle this “demanding” schedule, I’d suggest Uber or Door Dash. Good luck.

You are not special. Everyone has their own shite that stresses them that they have to deal with.

Stop giving a frick and just live.

My mother was a school teacher and dealt with the same stuff you have listed out. She was miserable to be around before she retired.

She also never understood how much people with office jobs work. She was oblivious to it. I’d kill to have her schedule with holidays.
