Can't believe diesels are the most reliable option in a pickup now.

This has been a down the hill snowball since the Obama administration. The fuel efficiency standards set has forced this inferior product.
Yup. And then they removed 700k used vehicles from circulation with his Cash for Clunkers bullshite. Making it harder to find a vehicle that actually runs like they used to in the 90s and early 2000s.
I bought my Ram used and got the extended warranty. It has the eTorque engine, which uses an MGU that replaces the traditional alternator. The MGUs are crapping out and seizing up on people. Dealerships are having issues finding replacements, so these poor bastards trucks are sitting in the dealership parking lot until the part is available. I've read horror stories of guys being without their trucks for 6 months.
Good news is that there are companies where you can send your MGU, and they'll send back a rebuilt one for $800. And its covered under warranty. So if mine shits the bed, I'll go to my mechanic buddy, have him trade in the part and have the warranty pay for it.
Once this truck is out of warranty, I'm trading it in. Probably roll the dice on a Ram with the Hurricane engine.

Avoid. Has its own issues.
The 1997 LS was the pinnacle of SBC development going back to 1955. That GM managed to destroy that in such a short period of time is truly remarkable

diesels
Are A LOT better across the board than 10-15 years ago. The exception is the 6.7 Cummins, those peaked in 2018.

I had a 2002 Silverado with the 5.3 and it was a bulletproof engine. Would not buy one today.

I trade them in right before 100k miles and service every 5k miles. No HO and I’ve never had one in the shop since the 10 speed came out in 2020

Depends on how you prioritize metrics; I'll take an LS9.

The Cummins are shite, they have a cooling problem. They’re the only truck up here in Colorado you see on the side of road with the hood up steaming.

They seem to be extremely good post 2022. But, I was hoping to hear about some 300k mile engines
They did a lot of work on those fuel systems for the 2019 model year and the whole engine has been a lot better since then.
I occasionally meet hot shot drivers running big fords. The vast majority of them are still running dodges around here with some fords and chevys sprinkled in.

Dodges are cheaper by a good bit is why. I’m a ford guy

So y'all are saying I should stick with my 2014 Ford F-150 with the Coyote 5.0 V8 for as long as possible?
Yea

Quite the opposite. 2027 F-150: The 5.0 Coyote is not only staying—Ford is reportedly expanding its availability back into King Ranch and Platinum.
Glad I’m wrong!
I’m a great example of why you should never believe what you hear on the internet.

Yep, it was a great engine. My dad also had a 2002 5.3 Silverado and it was still running strong at 225k miles 15 years later. The interior of the truck had fallen apart but drivetrain was good as new.

Incrementalism is the enemy. It’s always “it’s no big deal” and “this doesn’t bother me” until suddenly it is a big deal.

I think ford is discontinuing these for some reason. I also think Ford is going to try cylinder deactivation too, for some reason. Since it works so well in the GM engines.
This is false.
Also, the 5.0L has had cylinder deactivation since the 2021 model year.
Also, the other day i pass by a fairly large Ford Dealership outside Lafayette. I shite you not when I tell you that at least 95% of the trucks in the used truck lot were Chevy/GMC. Probably more than that.

$5k isn’t even as much as I would’ve expected

I know, I acknowledged above I had bad info. According to Grok:
quote:
A wave of June–July 2026 headlines claimed Ford “just dropped” the V8 from luxury F-150s. That was either old news (the 2024 change) or a trim-level availability cut, not an engine cancellation. The engine itself was never announced as ending.
Posted on 8/24/26 at 3:22 pm to kywildcatfanone
I have not bought a new GM or any other manufacturer because of the outlandish prices some of which are related to using the buyer to test questionable engine materials and design. I have a ZZ 5.7L crate engine that has seen 2 cam swaps, 1 crank swap, 1 rod and piston swap and nitrous all of which I did to run semi pro street and returning to a more derivable EFI-based pro touring/handling mode. The 5.7 engine is an incredibly reliable and straight forward design that GM should not have abandoned.

It was true, for awhile, that Ford had dropped the 5.0 from some trim levels.
Common sense prevailed and they changed their minds.
