I've leased 3 Audis in the past and absolutely loved them.

I'd never own German out of warranty, however.

How many have you owned?

, if you give your wife a luxury german car and she goes 5 years with “no hassle”, do you consider that a win?

Absolutely not. I expect my stuff to last forever. I get pissed when my grinding wheels wear out much less have a major vehicle failure. 5 years is nothing for a car. I drive a lot of miles a year and I'd be furious with only 5 trouble-free years from any vehicle.

Are you related to my ex brother in law? lol. My uncle cleaned up and did limited rebuilds on Aston Martins, Porsches, but I never recall him mentioning anything but a BMW and a Jaguar in the same sentence re: reliability.

How would this have helped him, unless he had reached the end of the lease already?

Coolant leaks and oil line leaks are dealerships favorite ways to charge $5k. frick them, get a good mechanic. Half the time the oil leak is totally bogus! Happens on my Beamer recently, bmw wanted $6500, highly qualified independent walked me thru it and said you see those oil stains? Thats from the oil change they just did on your car, not a leak.

With that said, buy a Lexus and don’t look back.

I've had two mid-sized Benz SUVs, best vehicles I ever owned. Wouldn't touch the others though.

I'd be pissed too if I was you, but you Fd up going to the stealership. Lord only knows what dumb shite happened the first time they worked on it. Lots of volkswagen engines get wrecked from broken timing belts. Rod knock is not a common way for engines to go anymore in any application. Modern engines just flat out don't fail that way.

This.

And aesthetically (to me) German cars are more attractive.

Just like being in love with a whore, I’d imagine (he said, having never literally been in love with a whore but considering that having the person to whom I was attracted to being an active prostitute would not be a pleasant experience…).

Anyone who owns a European car should find the best local independent shop that services them. Most any decent sized city will have them. They will be cheaper but it goes a lot further than that. They often are familiar with pattern issues in cars, can catch them early and will usually be familiar with 3rd party fixes that are often better than anything the dealership has and also much more likely to be permanent. Take for example the IMS bearing issue on 97 to 08 Porsches. A good indy will alert you to the potential issue and suggest you fix it before it becomes an issue. The will also likely suggest something like the LN Engineering retrofit kit which when done lets you sleep easy and is cheaper than a Porsche Service Center fix.

BTW the OP needs to get a second opinion there have been plenty of engines diagnosed with a rod knock that isn't actually a rod knock. Also I am not sure about that engine but it is possible to replace rod (or main) bearings on a lot of engines without removing the engine. I have never done rods myself but I have done engines with spun mains twice.

Own a 2019 Audi SQ5 and ran into to several of the issues mentioned in this thread. Replacing the brakes and one rotor without any warnings despite the Audi rotors supposedly having sensors to notify the driver whenever the pads are wearing thin. After the brake job, I damn near shat 6 quarts of oil due to a cracked oil filter housing unit. The Audi dealership wanted nearly $4k for parts and labor to replace. Found a local dealership to allow me to purchase my own parts and only charged me $800 for labor.

Despite all that crap, this suv is by far handles and rides better than any domestic suv. The Audi SQ5 even outperformed Cayenne that I owned for 2 years..

Btw domestics have their own fn issues bc I had numerous issues with my 14 f150

Lease would’ve ended two to three years before this failure occurred.

People knock it, but a friend's wife (no pic) is still driving hers with over 200,000 miles. She bought it after graduating college and hasn't had to do any major repairs, just regular maintenance.
