Thinking of buying new vehicle and one I'll be getting rid of has had one problem (cam shaft replacement). Can't decide to sell myself or just trade it in at dealership.

Money Board would probably give you better answers

Sales tax benefit (diminishment) for the trade value off the price of the new one.

Considering they will give rough trade in on the vehicle or 500 bucks less than than, better to sell outright

Sell it outright. Dealerships won't give you the actual value because they need some meat left over to make money too.
Private sell, someone may wheel and deal a bit, but it may only be for $1000 or so. The dealership will undercut you by at least $5000.

I recently sold a car because it was starting to have mechanical issues. Got it fixed and tried to sell it private party. Everyone who called was low balling me. Ended up selling to Car Max last weekend for $1500 above the best offer I had received.
It was still less than I had hoped to get based on KBB and NADA values for private sale, but I eventually decided it was better to be done with it.

Depending on the price of the vehicle being traded in, You could save $1000-$2000 on sales tax. Much easier to trade it in, but if you can get $3000+ More than trade in than it may be worth the hassle of selling

you have to decide if the time it will take to privately sell your car is worth the $$ difference. it could take a long time to privately sell your car. is that worth a few grand?

Sell the vehicle privately and get the dealership to do an "in and out" for you. Usually costs $125 and you get the sales tax reduction as if it were a trade.

I would rather lose out on a grand or maybe even 2 before having to deal with Joe Public trying to sell a damned used car
I just sold my camper and the shite people try to offer and barter is ridiculous

This is where I'm at. The last car I sold myself was a nightmare with all the lowballs and weirdos I had to get through before I sold the car. Ain't nobody got time for that.
Dealerships definitely lowball you on the trade, but just like everything else, it's negotiable. I've always been satisfied the with the number we agree upon. Sometimes it just takes a while to get to it.

I traded my truck in last month. I had a price in mind that I wanted for it, expecting Kelley or nada trade in value minus a little bit (expecting lowball).
Their initial offer was 3500 more than I was expecting

It depends. I got a rebate for having a trade in. That plus not having to pay sales tax and not having to fix up my vehicle made it worth trading in and not trying to sell.

Trading in is easier, but you will take $1K or more less than private sell depending on the car/condition. Private party selling is more hassle, but more money.

Depends on how much your car is worth. A $25K trade-in is worth $2K+ in tax savings. Plus sometimes
I've also seen my coworkers get pretty good trade-in on cars worth @ $5K when the dealership really wants to make a sale.

Do all the people saying this not understand negotiation?
They aren't going to let you walk out the dealership over a $1000 trade in difference. You just have to know how to deal.
