Reality show? That shite was just REALITY in 1936 except the prince wasn't a prince, he was Edward VIII, the fricking King of the UK who willingly gave up his throne to his brother (Elizabeth II's father) to marry a twice divorced American.

Can't say I blame them for wanting to get out from under the royal thumb and away from the probes of the British press. Get out of the spotlight for the most part and raise a family.

Yep.
And not just the entire British government but those of Canada, New Zealand Australia South Africa and so on, everyone from the Prime Minister to the lowliest MP threatened to resign en masse if the marriage went forward while he was still sitting on the throne as King.
Edward chose to abdicate the throne instead, his brother became King George VI and then when George VI died, Elizabeth became Queen and the rest is history.
When Elizabeth was born, she was never supposed to rule as Monarch and here she is as the longest reigning monarch in British History, longer than Queen Victoria in the 1800s.
2022 will mark 70 years on the throne for Queen Elizabeth if she makes it. It will be called the Platinum Jubilee.

It did kill his mom but I'm sure people will be upset about them shirking their important royal duties of waving sometimes.
