BBC

quote:

Jean-Yves Le Drian also accused the countries of "duplicity, a major breach of trust and contempt"

quote:

"The fact that for the first time in the history of relations between the United States and France we are recalling our ambassador for consultations is a serious political act, which shows the magnitude of the crisis that exists now between our countries," he told France 2. He said the ambassadors were being recalled to "re-evaluate the situation". But he said France had seen "no need" to recall its ambassador to the UK, as he accused the country of "constant opportunism". "Britain in this whole thing is a bit like the third wheel," he said

If Trump had done this, the PT would be living it up, talking about The Art of the Deal, how great it is to have a president who is America First, and asking everyone if they are tired of winning yet.

I thought we elected Biden to restore our standing in the world?

To be fair, making friends with some countries always means making enemies with other countries.

We could offer Australia nuclear subs. France couldn’t. Australia went with us. France mad. They’ll get over it.

Why exactly is he mad? Sorry haven't really followed this story that closely.

I didn't vote for Biden (I technically didn't vote for anyone, being I got COVID, though I would have voted third party, once again), but I'm not sure that "upsetting France because we stole their sub contract" constitutes actual loss of standing

This is a pretty bad take on what happened here.

When you recall your ambassador, you're not just whistling dixie.

In 2016, France signed an agreement with Australia to provide 12 subs for $37B. Now Australia is telling them to kick rocks, and that they are going to buy their subs elsewhere.

Exactly. This is more of a baller move than anything. Signals we will defend the Pacific.

While I agree 100%, this isn't a full recall. This is a "come home so we can talk without anyone else listening to us" recall. I think the fact that they didn't recall their ambassador to England is telling, especially being this was the explanation: "But he said France had seen "no need" to recall its ambassador to the UK, as he accused the country of "constant opportunism"."

Basically, "we already knew they were counts, so there's really nothing to update our ambassador on"

Either that or we will lie and scheme to get that money and by we, let me be perfectly clear, I mean the Biden administration. I don't know.

On the flip side, the partian national media and international Euro media would be talking about how Trump has badly damaged our NATO pact blah blah blah
