Our National Hero, Dr. Fauci, says they won't end even if there is a vaccine.

Mask mandates will never end for air travel and mega box stores like Target.

why would they give up a visible, tangible representation of control and compliance?

It will end when people start ignoring it en masse.

A week after the federal government gives JBE a shite-ton of cash in the form of a federal grant.

Prediction:
This flu season is going to be weaker than others because COVID has pulled deaths forward, in other words, COVID has killed a lot of people that are already close to deaths door and would have been killed by the upcoming flu season.
Masketeers will go full "correlation = causation" and claim that masks caused us to have a weak flu season. This will set the stage for mask mandates every flu season.
I hope I am wrong.

After months of almost total compliance, I'm starting to notice more and more places not only ignoring the mask mandate but actively telling customers that masks aren't required.

I wonder if anyone anywhere monitors other respiratory viruses, like say adenovirus or rhinovirus or other HCoVs, to see if they've decreased during these spring through summer and worldwide mask mandates.
Edit to add: CDC monitors, but it doesn't have long-term data easily found. According to the graph here on their site masks haven't changed the detection rate of HCoV-NL63, which seems to be the most consistent of the four common HCoVs. The other three don't seem to have annual outbreaks based on the two years shown in the graph.
Hmmm...
