This is true. My employees have learned the time that I open my eyes in the morning and started hammering me with problems. Now I started a rule, unless it’s an emergency, don’t call until 6am

Some businesses are open 24/7 …where do you draw the line there?

Well that is a good thing. It we’ve had instances where nurses needed more info from the previous shift OR left with the narc keys (

Dude. In my 20 years in the real world, there are always those co-workers.
They never take a day off. They work every weekend. They work till 9pm most nights. Blah blah blah.
I've worked an average of 32 hours a week for 20 years. Either they're lying or they're stupid.

Not how the world works today. Good luck to them

Do you give an hour back when you make a personal call during work?
What about when you’re on this site?

Do hourly workers get a lot of after hours calls?

Because if i work at waffle house, there are no after hours.

As a business owner I work close to those kind of hours but it's my choice, I directly benefit from it and I don't ask anyone who works for me to do it. I wouldn't work anywhere that required it and it shouldn't be asked except in unusual, rare situations. Employers do it because their employees put up with it and they can get away with it. If your boss has to harangue you at home that's an indication of something broken within the department and they should work on fixing it.
Before WWII a typical workday was 10 hours, 6 days a week with maybe a half day off on Saturdays. That's not the norm anymore. Employees being in call 24/7 shouldn't be either.

I’m not for the government stepping in but I also don’t want to be on call 24/7. I’ve had jobs where there were people who call for BS after hours and I stopped answering. But if it’s a job where there are legit emergencies and they only call if it is one, i’d like to have the option. As for emails, i’ve sent them after hours but i don’t expect anyone to actually open or read them until they are at work and i don’t read mine 24/7. Nobody’s sending an email for an emergency anyway.

Yeah, everyone complaining in this thread would throw a fit if company said they could not read a personal text, answer a personal call or check tiktok during working hours.

Yea, it has to be a two-way street. Employers put up with all kinds of personal bullshite with their employers, including wasting tons of time on the internet and their phones.
And I'm sure these WFH employees complaining about being contacted after-hours, NEVER do personal stuff during the day.

What happens if you’re a salaried employee (so no OT) and are given a stipend to have your phone on 24/7?
Exactly. My cellphone is owned by the company I work for so if they call I have to answer it.

I get what y’all are saying. But I recently watched an interview with Jimmy John guy, and he basically never took off and barely paid himself. He’d work open to close in his stores. And he started all of this at 18.
Now the dude makes more money than everyone on the OT.
There are people that do benefit from the hard work.

It really isn't an issue with most big companies. The after hours deal is mostly prevalent in small to mid-sized companies with a megalomaniac at the top who thinks they are entitled to anything from employees at any time.

Sure, when you have an ownership stake. In that case, knock yourself out. But if you're a salaried employee, being overly accommodating is, I would argue, counterproductive. It gets you labeled as a pushover, consciously or subconsciously. And that's never a good thing for your employer to think about you. If you don't mind working crazy hours you won't mind being passed over for that promotion or raise. Give them a solid day's work, go the extra mile when it makes sense, but don't let them walk all over you
