SEATTLE — It is a season for giving and, according to law enforcement officials in Washington County, Ore., taking as well. Two weeks ago, its Sheriff’s Office ran a sting operation to catch porch pirates, thieves who swipe packages from Amazon and other companies from doorsteps. Detectives from the department’s property crimes unit put several electronics items worth more than $500 in a box, dropped in a tracking device and “baited” a volunteer’s front porch in the town of Aloha. Sure enough, a pirate struck just after 2 a.m., and deputies traced him to a home two blocks away. In an apparent effort to cover up his deed, the 27-year-old suspect microwaved the tracking device, so he was charged with evidence tampering in addition to theft. Porch pirates have darkened people’s doorsteps for years. Law enforcement agencies say they think the crime is on the rise, along with the growth of online shopping. “There’s more packages for them to grab,” said Angela Sands, a spokeswoman for the Police Department in Lincoln, Neb.

Mike Armstrong, a general contractor in Memphis, has earned a reputation on his neighborhood’s Nextdoor forums as something of a vigilante. By his own estimate, Mr. Armstrong has confronted suspected package thieves more than a dozen times over the last four years, once on his own porch with the aid of his surveillance system. He said his neighbors call him the “strong arm of the law,” a play on his last name. “It’s almost like this sick perversion I have, catching thieves,” Mr. Armstrong said. Technology is also amplifying awareness of the problem, while serving as a deterrent. Internet surveillance cameras from Google’s Nest and Ring have made it easier for residents to capture video of package thieves in the act. Ring makes internet-connected doorbell cameras that start at $179. Homeowners can speak through the device to visitors — or bad guys — at their front doors using a smartphone app, even if they are not home. YouTube, Facebook, Nextdoor and other social media are popular places for frustrated residents to share the footage. Camera companies like Ring have used the videos as marketing.

Steven Kenworthy, a graduate student at Ohio State University in Columbus, expected a large box from Amazon with a $400 electric skateboard to arrive at his home in June. Amazon told him its carrier had delivered the item, but there was no trace of it. “Some rascal snagged my package,” Mr. Kenworthy said. He went on his neighborhood’s Nextdoor discussion forums and found reports of missing packages and suspected thieves tailing FedEx trucks through the area. “Everybody’s problems start feeling like your problems,” he said. “People were talking about how it was every single day packages would go missing.” Amazon sent him a replacement skateboard at no charge within two days, he said.

Amazon Locker

Ship To Your House

Live in a building with a doorman

Leave note for packages to be left by the back door

All viable options. If you’re having this issue, you’re kind of asking for it to happen.

ETA: the people who steal packages are still scum.

These people must be totally oblivious to the technology available to the people that live in these neighborhoods. If they were driving around in the hood stealing shite no one would know. The middle-class neighborhoods are filled with Ring doorbells now. The just arrested this a-hole yesterday. They had footage from 4 Ring cameras. She had a Lexus hatchback loaded down with everything from socks to people's prescriptions. They showed NOPD coming out of her govt. assisted housing complex with box after box of other people's shite. It was so fricking disgusting.

EBRSO nabbed a package stealer in my neighborhood yesterday. I even got to see the deputy take the dude to the ground and cuff him. He was definitely the guy in all the pictures posted on our neighborhood's Nextdoor site.

So far the only thing my cameras have caught is the neighbor lying to his wife about when he came home.

She is still doing that but her diet just got worse.

If I was in charge of jail food it would be red beans and rice every meal, unless I could think of something cheaper.

This is what I don't understand. There are cameras, people with cameras everywhere. It is a lot more risky.

My neighborhood has enough old people in it, that there is always someone outside working in their yard, riding their bike around the block for exercise, old women watching out of the window that there are always eyes throughout the neighborhood. Some of them old women.. If they see someone, that isn't a city worker or some other type of worker, they are not familiar with, they will call 911 to report "unusual activity".

The police make passes throughout the neighborhood throughout the day because if they don't the old people will be calling the councilman. One night someone in the neighborhood's truck got broken into (the door was unlocked) and they stole the change in the ashtray, an umbrella and batteries out of a flashlight. The old people went into mob mentality, went to the next city council meeting and raised hell.

I can verify this as true. It is how I met Plaquemine's equivalent of a Swat team. 10 cars surrounded me and a bunch of shaking, scared deputies drew down on me.

It really pisses them off when you have done nothing wrong and they can't think of anything to charge you with.

You know what? If I'm being honest I can justify murdering someone moreso than what the pieces of shite do.

For instance. Had a former co-worker who had a gigantic arse. So big that she eventually broke a large piece of furniture with her gigantic arse. That event led her to get the stomach-staple surgery and lose a good bit of weight. Good thing, right? However, because she was now "fit and trim" she was too good for her long time husband (who stayed with her as she ballooned into a furniture breaking monster). So she left him in order to go out and play the field and took the kids. He didn't do it obviously, but if he decided to kill her in a fit of rage I could probably understand it. But just walking up and taking someone else's packages just because you think you're somehow entitled to it is fricking indefensible.

All jokes aside, the a-hole in NOLA yesterday had prescriptions that were obviously for an elderly person. That's next level shite.
