It’s probably the same percentage as pedophiles in other areas - so then we can talk about the cover up - which has also happened in school districts and other churches - but it’s more fun to pick on the Catholics - plus it sure is brought up a lot more anyway
Why not do an article on alcoholic priests or priests that have affairs with the secretary? I’ve known more priests doing that than any child molestors. But that’s not degrading and sensational enough.

It's almost like suppression of young catholic boys' sexuality and the promise of "you can't be gay if you're celibate" has nurtured a prime habitat to create pedophiles.

You don't see the same problem inside of the Episcopal church. Same general belief orthodoxy but don't have the child rape problem.
Downvote all you want, but the inability to marry is a significant contributing factor.

I don't think being single and celibate has anything to do with being a pedophile - especially when most of these pedophile priests are attracted to boys, not girls. I feel like pedophilic men go into the clergy hoping that their lust will be tempered by strict adherence to prayer, ritual and routine. However, some of them can't escape their urges and wind up committing heinous acts of pederasty.

That sucks. This will kill his chance of Saint-hood. He did a ton of good as pope, but there’s no excuses for covering up disgusting crimes like this and allowing them to continue

You can't see how requiring celibacy results in a higher percentage of those creeps in collars?

I know, that's why I had the eye roll. It's a people and an institutional problem. IDK how many times I've heard the whole "don't let behavior of the people in the church taint your view of the church" thing.

No, I can't. Because the Byzantine church allows their priests to marry and yet they still have similar problems in regards to pedophilia as the Roman church does.

The fact that they covered up for so long created a culture of pedophilia which invited more pedophiles who saw the priesthood as a safe haven. That went on for decades so just imagine the scope of pedophilia still active today!

5% of adult males in the general population are child abusers

As far as “ rare church documents to which he managed to get access” I have a couple feelings. 1) no doubt Francis is behind this access and 2) I could see Francis selectively allowing access to make things appear worse. He (Francis) is doing his level best to destroy the traditional Catholic Church.
