He also tried to push a regulation in Congress that would have required offshore rigs to have a work boat nearby. The marine industry are his biggest contributors.

That’s been a regulation since the Deepwater Horizon disaster

This N La baw gives no fricks. ?

I'm sure you would be crying if foreign companies came and chopped down all of your timber (the only viable industry in N LA that actually contributes to the economy, South LA's economy subsidizes the rest) , decimated the deer population, or drained all of the reservoirs.

lol it’s a simple concept I needn’t be a fisheries biologist or coastal fisher person to figure it out.

So the simple concept, that's not happening btw, is for wildlife and fisheries to harass rec fishermen

You do get that the scenario you're talking about isn't happening, right?

There are a few foreign-owned saw mills being built right now. Should I worry?

Oh, and you swamp rats overrun our deer woods every goddamned winter.

What's the rationale for this? Those rigs get serviced by OSV's don't they?

Money, he has an opensecrets profile from his time in Congress. Workboat companies were his biggest contributors. It was one of the reasons why he lost to Boustany in 2012.
He actually had a lot of O&G support prior to this. Remember his "Drilling=Jobs" sign? He basically did a 180 after getting his contributions from the International Seafarer Union and some contractors. He even co sponsored the bill with liberal Elijah Cummings.

One workboat company is his biggest supporter. Shane Guidry and Harvey Gulf. They’ve been on the political scene since the 80’s- 90’s.

because Omega Protein and others have some state elected officials bought and paid for.

Start naming names. Get these officials names into the public discourse. Most voters don't know who the bad players are, they just know "some of them" are corrupt.

Senator Patrick Connick District 8
Senator Bob Hensgens District 26

The 2 Louisiana pogy plants are in these two senators districts. Hensgens is the Chairman of the State Natural Resorce Committee, and Connick is on it as well. Before any bill can get to the floor of the senate it has to go through the Committee. And if Hensgens doesn’t want to hear it, it dies and never makes it out of committee to get voted on.

Which is what happened in 2022 with House Bill 1033, and this year with House Bill 576.

And then even if one gets through to the governor next year, if Landry wins he’s pretty much said unless there is a large scientific study that says I need to do this I won’t restrict commercial fishing.

And that was in regards to only the 1 mile buffer. CCA wasn’t even asking about quotas.

Waguespack at-least went on record and said he would support pushing menhaden fishing 1 mile off the coast.

I posted this in the same thread on the Outdoor Board. You can read between the lines on Landry's response that he would likely veto any action against the Pogey boats.

CCA interviews candidates on pogie issue

Landry:
I oppose wasteful fishing practices, whatever they may be. Commercial fishing operations must be conducted in a responsible and sustainable way, including the bycatch from the menhaden fishery. This will allow us to maintain Louisiana’s precious natural resources. There must be an accountable balance between commerce and conservation.

I support science-based fishery management. If science indicates that additional regulations on the menhaden fishery will materially improve the health of other species, particularly troubled species like redfish and speckled trout, then as Governor I will support those new regulations.

I would however, not support regulation that harms any commercial fishery that is not supported by science. Just as I have done in opposing unnecessary regulations that hurt our recreational fishing.

Jeff Landry (R)

Wags:
YES. I will support such a limit. I am committed to working together with all parties to implement this in such a way that will protect the coast and these critical resources, enhance the recreational experience and also secure the Louisiana jobs in this industry. By working together, we will get this done.

Don't the boats want the fish to come on board alive? Or is it ok if they come on board dead?

Dead is fine. The pokey are just ground up.

If there redfish limits, and the pogy boats are catching redfish in their nets even as a by-product, how are the boats / pilots / companies not being hit with fines and penalties for exceeding redfish limits?

Shrimpers would go out of business with all the trout, reds and flounder they catch.

I have seen schools of bull reds as far as the eye can see within a few miles of shore...i am sure they have netted huge schools of reds. frick the pogey boats. I am glad the processing plant by my camp closed years ago.

It really is ridiculous that Louisiana allows that industry to operate as they do. I'm usually for government staying out of business as much as possible, but this is one example where they need to put some regulations in to stop the damage those pokie boats do. It is crazy they're allowed to do so much damage and so few benefit from it.
