I’ve built a chlorine unit in Dow Freeport and been there when an older chlorine unit had a level 1 leak (of course they called it a level 1 but it was definitely a level 2). The green cloud and smell are definitely a thing. Luckily it was a small leak that happened on the weekend. Only interrupted construction for an hour or so. This shite is way worse. Bad bad. Hope everyone is ok and they had enough warning to get everyone to a safe area before it got bad. Can’t wait to find out what the knee jerk reaction from Dow and Olin are now due to this. It will be implemented and felt world wide in all of their facilities and I am in a Dow facility daily.

According to the OT posters in the thread about iron dust from Almatis, those people shouldn’t have moved in there

What a stupid take from that thread

fricking yikes.

My Pops worked (and retired) from a chemical plant that handled chlorine and pretty much every thing else. He would always tell the story of a leak/release from a tanker....on his third day of work. He would tell the story of GTFO of the yard. He said he ran and ran, made it to a fence, climbed it, hit the ground on the other side and kept running. It was his third day and he didn't know shite. By the time he stopped running he noticed he was well outside the plant. He had to go back to the gate, tell them who he was, where he'd come from, and why he was outside. The guy who was working with him ended up making it, but had to spend some time in the hospital.

Chlorine is nasty shite. Pops got the hell out of the chemical plant the first chance he got. He had a few brushes and close calls. One sent him to the ER. He worked the majority of his time at the film plant. He only put in less than three years at the chemical plant (same company).

I don't know what they call it. I just know he got the hell away from the chemical plant as soon as he could.
Now, the film plant was on the same property, it was just a hell of alot more stable and better for the nerves.

My dad used to bring home his respirator from DOW in the 70s, and as a little kid I used to wonder, "What is that thing going to do?" It had a little nose pincher and looked like a toy.

Ah, the old sugar tit. Carried one for many years. Only had to use it once.

There was a similar event (fire and release) years ago. Catastrophic compressor failure and iron-chlorine fire.

Bad. Very bad.
