Because whatever they do for improvements will get vandalized and/or stolen, there will trash all around it and if its a new business, it will get robbed into oblivion

Because it’s literally throwing money away (from a city/state that doesn’t have it to throw away) into one of the biggest shite holes in Baton Rouge.

Ok but the shite hole needs to not be a shite hole. While I have less than no faith that SEB and her cronies like gravy can improve anything, isn’t it the role of locally elected governments to try and improve the area the people they represent live?

What about focussing on the children and school system?

Only the people living there can make it not a shite hole and they just don't care.

Why does it need revitalizing

There aren’t many people alive who can remember when Plank Road was vitalized.

Pretty much.

A reasonable expectation of revitalization would be to build off of existing corridors of success and work into currently distressed areas.

Problem is that the usual suspects see that as either pushing gentrification or developing white areas at their expense.

They want an “easy” fix where there is massive redevelopment overnight in shitty areas which can’t support such businesses and wouldn’t generate outside traffic that would keep them open.

An example of this kind of mindset is one councilwoman (Chauna Banks?) bitching about the development of the Renaissance Hotel in what is about to be St George and suggesting that the same project could have been done in NBR close to the airport.

No fricking luxury hotel is going to move into NBR where they have to gate in the parking lots and use razor wire to discourage break ins, regardless of the amount of government handouts given toward that end.

Bingo. Building a bunch of nice new public works will not change anything. It’s a mentality problem.

They've been "doing" that for 50 years. EBRP schools are in the bottom 10 worst in the state and the state is in the bottom 5 worst in the country.

But we spend well over the state average per pupil. And LA ranks in the 20s as far as education spending per kid. Throwing more money at it won't fix anything.

An upgraded Plank Rd could act as a much-needed release valve for when I-110 backs up.

Because the majority of people who live in those areas do nothing to maintain their properties.

I'd love to see a cleaned up NBR. The roads and infrastructure are there for it to be successful. There's just seems to be something holding it back.... I can't quite put my finger on what that is though...

If Mike Wampold or John Enquist stepped upped to the podium and committed X Million dollars to a major project in NBR, and Amazon announced a regional operations center there, and Apple stepped up about building a regional sales office there all because the parish had stepped up to the plate and committed CATS to provide public transportation, road upgrades and a waiver of city sales taxes in the blighted area then we’d have something to crow about,

But I do not suspect we will see any of that. I think we will hear all about how the parish with Federal and local taxes is going to revitalize NBR. And that won’t work.

Even if we had all of the above, we would still have all the blight around it which would be encroaching on all sides.

The first time an Apple or Amazon mid-level exec gets seriously injured or killed, the whole thing would collapse virtually overnight.
