Yeah they weren't in an emergency situation and were in a very manageable situation until they flew directly into a thunderstorm right at the end. But with their inexperience, their fate was sealed when they turned north instead of south when they were near the Gulf coast.
I’m a chuckle frick with zero experience but if I saw giant storms north, no storms south, I’m going south
Why the frick did they go north?

Probably had the radar in north-up mode and got confused.
Rookie mistake.
It happens.

You're cool with a pilot in charge of 7 people's lives firing off text(s) moments before the aircraft she helping fly, navigates directly into a supercell. That's just a wild thing to be ok with. She should have been actively monitoring the weather radar that moments later got them killed.
To think a text changed this in any way is wild. The text didn’t make the decision to turn north and try to weave through it vs head south and avoid it entirely. If you’re looking for fault just to place blame somewhere before we even know all the facts that’s where to point, not the text.

Did ATC send them in that direction or did they request? Also, how sensitive was their onboard radat?

It bothers me that they decided to turn north instead of south. The weather was much better to the south. They were flying across the Gulf on airway Y280 (shoddy flight planning by whoever planned for them, you should fly on Y290 from Texas to that part of the Bahamas). They did move to Y290 right off the Gulf coast of Florida and could have flown Y290 basically direct to Nassau then flown direct to MYEH.
For some reason they turned north toward bad weather and were flying "direct to Freeport" as she says on the audio. That is right into some terrible weather. The weather was clearer the way they were going.

If the pilot was more experienced and had control and was making decisions the co-pilot sending a text 10 minutes before would seem to be a footnote.

Who ever made the decision to go north is full fledged fricking idiot. It was the most obvious go south situation ever.
I could have been the mega brained hero with me and The Boat by simply opening my hunting weather GPS app and saying “go south away from the big red weather shite”

Alleged distraction in the cockpit isn't a fault moments before/as critical errors are made that lead to unrecoverable decent?

I don't understand this either.
My hypothesis is that the storm was rapidly developing or expanding and they didn't see it until it was too late. I'm not a weather person. But the fact that they ran into this storm at that altitude is nuts - that thing was clearly a big one, and they should have stayed the frick away from it if they were aware of it.

The anti DEI warriors trying desperately to make this solely the woman's fault.

Weird, for sure. Maybe they thought they could outrun that line?
They got real unlucky that the cell blew up at the same time they were heading into it.
I have no clue, but do you know if there's some sort of lag on the radar in those planes? Are they looking at 5-minutes prior, or is it live radar?

Maybe. It was a much smaller cell that appeared to cause the problem. Not a lot sure what ATC and the pilots were seeing when decision to vector north was made.

I’m trying to figure out why they went north too. Coming into Miami from the northeast I brought up to the capt I was flying with all this weather spinning in off the Atlantic as we get closer and see real time but maybe at the GA/SC border we head down the west coast of Florida and join up with the Vudoo arrival into soflo cause the Everglades are weather free

It was both their faults based on all the current data.
She shouldn't have been texting, that's obvious at this point. She should have been actively assisting the PIC navigate the weather right in front of them that they had been working to avoid. They shouldn't have flown directly into a supercell.

Probably tried the run the gauntlet and go above the weather to save fuel and make the charter-owner happy.
A lot of ships are at the bottom of the sea on this same account.

The other thing that would have saved them is if they would have done like most private pilots and avoided this entire weather system in the first place, to avoid icing and upward lift scenarios?
This is probably a dumb question but how do pilots spot potential bad weather and who decides the route to avoid it?
Are the radars and stuff on the planes sophisticated enough to give the pilots sufficient info, or is it a joint thing with ATC?

I would be interested to see a Sully level pilot in the simulator work the reported flight characteristics and see how he does.
The simple answer is that experienced pilots with that sort of aircraft would have never been anywhere close to that storm. I think that's really end of story.
There's a reason why weather like this is avoided every day. I think this is likely to be a very rare bad luck situation, but its something that happens and that's why you avoid it.
People are saying that it was a "pop up", I mean hell I'm seeing green across damn near all of south florida.
