I'm glad my employers never called.

I thinks it's the super slick LinkedIn page and using lots of jargon and knowledge that helps.

Maybe your buddy is a douchebag and that’s why she didn’t work. You may have just passed on the greatest opportunity to date because your buddy held a grudge against this woman and she was telling the truth.

I would say it’s pretty clear you’re having doubts. Why post this otherwise?

Starting to sound like this woman may have a case against you. And your buddy.

Yep. He had a come to work personality and she had a call in sick personality. Unfortunate for everyone.

Now imagine if she called every employee you’ve ever had and did a complete background check on you as a boss. Would you come out stinking like shite?

If she interviewed well and you want to hire her then give her a shot.

One trick I learned was to call the references listed on the resume and ask for three more people who knew the candidate's qualifications.

This gets you a little closer to the truth.

I didn't know people still had legit references. Every company I know will only confirm employment dates. I guess if you are going from one small mom and pop to another.

You and he both better be careful with this.

How do you protect yourself against hiring a bad employee based on one good interview? Investigate. Call people. You'll be glad you did.

I personally dont think anyone should put too much emphasis on previous Employers except to check if they worked there.

This is more obvious in small towns, but people tend to be too buddy-buddy with their employees. Im not saying this is the same for her case, but that the employer should be suspect just as much as the employee.

Employers shouldn't discuss much about former employees. Sets up for getting sued. The guy you know may have been an arse to her, thus could hold a bias.
"Not working while you are there" can be used for a lot of people who don't work directly with an employee.
I'd highly recommend finding out more on her rather than just taking your guy's word.

Further, her reasons for leaving aren't necessarily untrue, even if she was "fired".
Many, on the brink of getting fired, will resign, not to having been actually fired.
