I'm no lawyer, but you may want to be careful. Unless she listed that person as a reference, you probably shouldn't do that unless you want to open your company up to a lawsuit.

Also, you only heard one side of the story. She didn't lie to you, and you don't know what really happened between her and the former employer. If you really liked her as a candidate, that should have been enough.

I agree. It's one thing to verify qualifications. It's another to find someone "in the good old boy network" as the metaphor implies.

Small town employers can be hit or miss because they rely too much on speculators.

Do you expect her to say "well, I was actually fired for not showing up and when I did, I didn't do any work". If she did that she will never find another job,

That's assuming this is the truth. The previous boss could have been a dick for all we know.

The OP contacted someone who wasn't listed as a reference and based a hiring decision on that. Not smart.

Doesnt always work. Some companies will only confirm position and dates of employment to avoid potential litigation.

“Mutual thing” and “personal differences” are huge red flags regardless of how well the interview went.

When she says “mutual” she is openly saying the company didn’t want to keep her. What company doesn’t want to keep good employees?

And personal differences I can understand if hiring for an executive position where people may have different visions for the company... but an associate position should have no personal al views or differences. They are an associate who is supposed to follow orders. Period.

Companies worth anything do this. Not only is it the law, I’m not going to do anything to stop my competition from hiring my shite former employees. OP is dumb. I could pilfer his entire firm and have his best people working for me in two months. He’s not even hired this woman and he’s bashing her anonymously online while admitting to violating labor laws. It won’t take me long to find out what he and others think about the people they’ve actually hired.

Disagree. Toxic work environments and overall strategic differences aren't all that rare.

There’s two or three sides to every story. The guy you talked to probably tried to bone her and now he’s shite talking her because she wouldn’t.

How do you know? What if that's code for he came on to me inappropriately, but I'm an adult so I didn't go SJW on him?

I'm glad most of you have no real affect on business decisions.

Seriously?

There are poorly run companies everywhere that run off their best employees for nearly everything from poor compensation, to lack of progressive responsibility, to micromanaging those that should have autonomy.
