People who want to have issues/problems

Is this a recent phenomenon or have there always been people who live good lives wanting to have problems?
Anecdotal example: A co-worker of mine who is successful, married, kids, seemingly happy etc… He just went and got him self diagnosed as autistic and now he brings it up all the time and uses it as a reason why he’s socially awkward and was “never popular” growing up. What exactly is the point of that other than to make yourself feel special?

Victimhood is a virtue in our society these days.

people want to be able to classify themselves as victims so they dont have to be responsible.

Anything to garner a bit of attention or sympathy.
They've been around forever.

I find that personally it’s a form of self sabotage. I’ve gotten a lot better at identifying it, but it’s really hard to see in the moment. It’s only when I look back I realize what was going on.
Everything going great, I’m on track to make progress on whatever goal I’m working on, I immediately start looking for issues. I don’t know that I’m doing it, the issues seem real, but I need something in the moment to stop me from getting closer to the goal.
I think it’s a manifestation of low self esteem and self worth.

He's obviously not as happy as you assumed
Sounds like he felt like you are somebody he could share this issue with. Try having some empathy.

95% of the responses to COVID by the Chinese Flu True Believers was so they could say, “I survived the worstest epidemic in the history of mankind! Worstest ever!”

Boredom - the world now relies on small doses of dopamine to get them through the day. I blame it on smart phones and microwave ovens.

The Victim Olympics and internet Therapy Culture has given people a platform to lord their mental illness over Normals. The proper OT response is to point and chuckle. Or you could help them on their healing journey as the soccer board recommends. Or beat them sadistically about the face and neck like the political board advises.

It provides them with a sense of belonging/community after not being able to connect with others for most of their lives.
It’s also not autistic, it’s neurodivergent.

My opinion is People want an explanation for why things are the way they are. Take your co worker for example. He wanted some definable reason he was socially awkward and not popular in school.
I think it’s part of a bigger problem. 100+ years ago most people spent 90% of their waking hours doing things to keep them alive. Today we have so much free time on our hands people create problems where there aren’t any. Victimhood being one of the leading reasons people come up with.
