100% agree as a parent of two boys 3 and 5 years old. I know I shouldn't be, but I'm surprised by the amount of posters in here who seem to do this themselves with the "wait until you have kids" comments.

You're surprised when judgemental assholes attempt to pretend they know how to raise your kids?

Here's the fact of the matter. If i want to give my kids a phone, or ipad or switch or whatever, while at a restaurant, and as long as the volume isn't blaring and the kids are being good, what is it to you?

Also, i'd love to know the difference between electronic distractions and coloring books. Ever wonder why most restaurant give you a kids menu and a pack of colors? TO KEEP THEM ENTERTAINED.

Yea, kids are fricking easy at that stage. Kindly STFU until you have actual kids to deal with.

Ah, to be so naive as a new parent. Good luck with that sport!

No, i'm surprised by the number of posters who use the phone as a crutch.

I don't really care what you do. It's a message board and I just made a comment on the topic at hand.

I would prefer for my kids to be coloring than watching a screen.

Tell me you don’t have young kids without telling me you don’t have young kids. You do anything you can to get them to STFU. Granted, there’s a limit to having a noise level to disturb other customers, but generally speaking…

Edit: also lol @ at all the mother fricking LIARS in here who say they don’t give their kids screens…give me a fricking break

Be a damn parent and teach them how to interact politely in public without a flashing screen.

Only my oldest (who is 18) has a phone

But then again we don’t go out to eat or talk to each other

I'd prefer my kids do a lot of things, but sometimes they act like kids. No one in this thread is advocating for noting but screen time for kids. Absolutes like that are ridiculous. Just like it's ridiculous to lie and say your kids never get screen time or are perfectly behaved whenever out in public.

6 year old definitely is. 2 year old only gets upset if she’s hungry, and we’ll throw that brawd an applesauce pouch and she’s fine.

Believe what you want.

Either way my kids aren’t just zombies with phones in their faces every time we go somewhere.

ETA iF the two year old gets rowdy I’ll take her outside until she calms down.

I'm always wary of telling parents they should do _______ because I suspect 3, 6, etc. months from now my world might be very different.

We eat out at least 4-5x week. It's not usually relaxing because it's a pretty constant effort to steer attention back and avoid meltdowns, but hopefully it's reinforcing the ideas we want to instill (without screens, at least for now). I think some (like my siblings) scoff at the idea of spending 50 bucks on a 30 minute dining experience requiring you to eat with one hand, but the hope is that it will pay off down the road.

They're terrified to go to anywhere but pure kid places, but how is he going to learn if you don't put him in those positions? Not convinced our philosophy is right, but it's what we're going with.

I agree with all of this. I think my kids get too much screen time as it is, I'm always trying to find instances to cut some of it out. I understand it's unavoidable sometimes

We avoid giving our son (3 y.o. now) a phone until he's getting belligerent or bored. He turns into a hellion when he's too hungry.

Most often, we sit down and immediately order something for him to eat, and he's usually done eating by the time adult food comes.. And after a while of sitting and playing with crayons or whatever, he gets bored and wants to start running around, bothering people, hollering, etc. So we just turn on a show until we're done.

Lazy parents raise shitty kids. We never once gave our kids an electronic device to pacify them in public. One is graduating in a few weeks with a 4.0 and the other will do the same in 2 years.

People need to spend time interacting with their kids instead of sticking a screen in front of them.

Cool, my SIL is crushing med school and she got electronics constantly. Anecdotes are fun.

Hmm, better than watching Paw Patrol on the screen, but still worse on the eyes than just a regular coloring book
