I’ve been at the same soul sucking multinational firm for nearly a decade. I have come to hate the company and I’ve considered leaving several times.

Most recently, I passed up a great opportunity because I realized I would have hated that company too and I get paid a great living. All these big companies are hellscapes. Tons of phony people saying phony shite for one another’s approval. And the devil I know is better than the devil I don’t.

I understand needing to bring in money, but what I'm asking is what keeps you at the same place year after year, particularly if you can get a job somewhere else. How do you keep doing the same job/industry for decades?

I mean. What a moronic statement and question lol

24 years working for my employer. I have a pension, 401K, 6 weeks paid vacation, travel all over North America, and great benefits for my wife and I. The pay is pretty good too. That's why I do it.

Working 40 years for the same family. Just got fricked out of a $7500 bonus because “I missed too much time”. Brother with stage 4 cancer and a sister died from dementia. But I missed a few days.

I have been with the same company since 2000. I am one of the equity partners and started this business with guys that I worked with at a multinational corporation in the late nineties. We have survived multiple recessions, wars, pandemics, everything. We're still alive and kicking.

We've had arguments and disagreements here and there but basically the guys I started this business with are honest and we trust each other. I've made more money than I ever thought I would make. To anyone young who is reading this thread I have this to tell you. Don't be a cog in a machine. Start your own business. Don't work for someone else, work for yourself.

I’ve been at my company 10 years this year. I enjoy the work, make good money, and like my coworkers. Plus I live 7 minutes away. Why would I leave?

This is me, sort of. 15 years at my company. Got 2 girls 6 & 8 (sorry no pics, and why don’t you have a seat). I still need to raise them, cars, college, etc. As others have said, I like what I do. My boss is laid back . Sort of lets me do what I want. Lets me manage my team. I have a good thing going. Now, if an incredible offer drops in my lap, sure I’ll consider it. But it would need to a significant leadership role. Not like 10-20%.

Not many but since we've been there for so long we are grandfathered in and will still get ours.

Stop considering what you do to be a job.

Find something you are good at and love to do and start having a career.
If you love what you do you will never work another day in your life
Become self employed.

I worked within the same overall company for 16 years but that included about 5 completely different types of companies on different ERP systems. Worked at about 7 locations in Houston area. From simple oil & gas services to complex offshore projects with our $200 million vessels with cranes and ROVs.

Had 2 employers since 99. First job there was always more reasons to stay than leave. Many big companies offer good advancement because there’s constantly people moving on & this a void of leadership. In my circumstance, I was able to grow quickly with the company. My current situation has offered me more reason to stay because of stability, financial growth. I could see myself retiring here. Loyalty has its advantages, but it’s only worked for me because it was mutually beneficial. Had that not been the case, I may have moved on. I picked 2 good employers and worked hard to take advantage of opportunities in both cases

I've enjoyed the work. It's challenging and generally keeps me too busy to notice the stupid shite that would normally make a person miserable.

In 27 years, I've only considered quitting 3 times:
1) 2001 recession. Considered leaving because of lack of raise and lost benefits. The economy improved, and so did my pay/benefits.
2) 2012 shitty boss. I took 4 weeks of vacation to get away from the boss, and investigated a career change. While I was on vacation, my shitty boss got fired.
3) 2022 shitty management. The problem was solved when the CEO fired all the shitty managers. He cleaned house, and I really like the new management. This was the closests I've ever been to leaving. I had a job offer in hand for a similar job, similar commute, and would not need to relocate. It feels like I made the right decision to stay. Just got a nice raise and STIP.

I’ve been at the same place for 7 years and in the same industry for 10. I find that with each year that passes my job gets easier and easier, because I never stop learning and bettering myself. The thought of starting over new somewhere else is terrifying to me.

I value a simple life. If you are one of those people who is never happy with what they’ve got, this isn’t the ideal route for you. You need constant challenge, new people, new things, and probably stuck in an endless loop keeping up with the Jones’ buying a new King Ranch every other year—and that is perfectly fine if it makes you happy.

Will have 35 years in May. The reason I stick around? Easy money, 42 days paid vacation plus 11 holidays, fat pension, and high matching 401k. Plus, been working from home 98% of the time since March 2020.

Been with 3 companies over my 22 years.

-First company was entry level. Gained some knowledge and experience but stayed about 18 months too long

-Was at my second company for 10 years but really had 3 different jobs and tripled my compensation over that time through the promotions. Was great but a major management change led me out the door.

-Now been with my current employer for 8 years. Was thinking about leaving but got a nice promotion as someone retired recently, so I’ll be in this role likely 5 years at a minimum. Then it will be time to decide on if I want one more move before retirement. Not sure I want my bosses job. Luckily there is one more level within this role that should provide a decent pay bump in 2 ish years

So basically, the ability to get promoted, move to slightly different roles once every 4-5 years has kept my company jumping to a low degree

20 yrs at same firmnow. left an employee owned consulting firm to come to industry, but they were bought out and now serve the shareholders....
Industry firm has vested pensions, very good benefits and when i started great mgmt. Now managers are idiots and just check boxes. I am in an env division and our vp came from hr. Hope That will change when ceo changes. Nothing is constant but change
