Hawaiians love white tourists...they just don't like it when white people move to Hawaii to live there.
I have family who live there, I think they've been there about 5 years or so, and they haven't experienced the racism that I hear about. They've heard stories about it, but never experienced it first hand. We were there for 2 weeks and I didn't see/feel any sort of racism and we weren't in the touristy areas. Mostly spent time in Kailua/Kaneohe.

Superficial people. More so than everywhere else. No one is what they are. Yes, I've been a bartender for 25 years but I'm really a screenwriter.....
My experience with CA is limited to L.A., so maybe the rest of it doesn't suck quite as bad, but L.A. brings the whole place down.

Outside of SF, only way you're paying that much is if you want to.
I live in downtown SD and don't pay anywhere close to that.

eah the show Big Little Lies was one giant tourism ad for Monterey. I could settle for there as well
Pretty awesome scenery in that show, even better in real life.

I lived there for four years and didn't have any bad experiences. I'm sure they happen but it wasn't as bad as I'm always reading here.

Yeah I can agree with you on those. Another thing I miss in California is wearing a hoodie pretty much all year during the nights. Everywhere else I've lived it's always hot as shite still at night. I didn't enjoy the fog and light rain all the time in Cali, but that's what you get living in a moist area haha.

I'm going to SD next month for a much needed weekend getaway for my 40th. Whale watching worth it there?

I loved San Diego, but I hated L.A. for the following reasons:
dirty
expensive
too much traffic
strip mall architecture
If I want to live someplace dirty with too much traffic and strip mall architecture, I'll just stay home in Baton Rouge where it's at least affordable.

What do you pay? I've been looking into jobs out there.

I have been to CA.. Most specifically LA. Personally, it isn't a place I would like to live.. Of course the cost of living is high, but people also make more right?
For those who live in CA and enjoy it, I have a question for you. If you were a head coach (pick your sport).. And you were offered... Let's $2M a year from a team in CA and from a team in the southern states. You just had to pick where you wanted to go. Would you be okay with $2M living in CA or would you pick the job in the southern state?

$2m/year in CA is like $2.5-3M/year in some southern states.

I would be fine coaching the Padres for $2million over the Atlanta Braves for $2million. Haha

You've obviously never seen or heard of skid row in downtown Los Angeles. It is the most godforsaken place in America.

No question, I would take the $2 million and work for the Padres in San Diego. Making $2 million/year, I could really enjoy the west coast life style.
$2 million may go farther in Atlanta, but I have to live in f&%king Atlanta. Atlanta is similar yet completely inferior to L.A. in all respects but price. The only upside is I could afford to retire faster, why would I need to retire when I'm making $2 million/year playing a game while living in 72 degree weather year round?

That's honestly not bad. 1 bedrooms in downtown BR can easily go for $1200/month and they're in Baton Rouge
Does that include a covered parking space?
How long does it take to get to the beach at Coronado?

I don't. Go a few times a year for work. I'll be in San Diego/La Jolla in a few weeks. Love it. The weather is perfect, the people are always nice, there's neverending good food and drink, and the state offers a variety of options as you move north.
I couldn't afford to live there and wouldn't unless I had the money, but if I DID have the money, I know I'd love it.
L.A. isn't "amazing" all over, but the shithole sentiment is way overblown. Parts of DTLA/Hollywood and certain lower income residental areas are shitty, but there's also numerous beautiful parts of town. It's like people visit once and see all the tourist shitholes and decide the entire city is that. It's like going to New Orleans, never leaving the Quarter, and calling New Orleans a dirty infested toilet.. when they are many beautiful and more quiet parts of New Orleans.
