Outside of Hawaii, California is the most naturally beautiful state there is. Mountains, beaches, snow, lakes, etc...

I lived in California from 2006-2013 while stationed at Edwards AFB. The only two things I didn't like about being in California was the traffic in the LA Basin and overall cost of living.

Too many freaking people
My sister lived outside of San Fran for 15 years, I visited frequently and loved it but there's too many people for that area.
It's beautiful though

Yep, BAH for me was around $2k and I was in a nice 2 bedroom in Fallbrook for around $950. Had friends in Carlsbad that lived about 1/2 mile from the beach paying around $1,600. This was back in 2010-2013

Yeah I think it was around $1900/mo for E5 in 72601. Lots of friends had sweet arse houses in Temecula. Some friends had $700 studios in Fallbrook.
Ppl over act all the time and of course you'll have high arse rent/mortgage in larger cities especially inside the city.
I remember some officers living in Encinitas, SD or LA communities as well. If you are willing to travel and not be downtown LA you can find many nice places for decent rent

Agreed. If I ever won the lottery and had "I never have to work another day in my life" money...I would move to Southern CA in a heartbeat. Somewhere on the coast.

I think Hawaii is more racist because of the original culture (locals) mixed with transplants and tourists. Don't think it's as much black and white.

I nearly accepted a PhD offer from Arizona State and would LOVE to move there from the South. Phoenix is a sprawl and really suburban. But the people are laid back and just...I don't know...sunshine. That's how I would describe them.
Then there's every kind of outdoor activity you could want within driving distance.
Only thing that would bother me would be the extreme heat that doesn't let up. While it's hot in Alabama in February right now, we'll get a reprieve soon. March and April aren't bad. May and even early June can be nice. Then you have thunderstorms and a few cool periods throughout the summer. By September, you're back down into the 80s waiting on fall.
Phoenix is 100+ from mid May to October. That would get old.

I'd move back to NC on the beach. I liked the Atlantic over the Pacific. Just my preference.

Santa Barbara was pretty awesome, but if I had frick you money I'd probably move to the Carmel/Monterey area.

I just loved how you have southern CA with warmer weather and beaches....and then you can go up to northern CA and have cooler weather with beautiful ocean views from cliffs.
Also...the easy proximity to any type of outdoor activity you could want.

I lived in California for 10 years. The worst thing about California is Californians. I don't see how the state doesn't eventually become insolvent or declare bankruptcy or something like that. They are already so far over their skis financially that it's too late to turn back. That is the main reason I left. The state is beautiful and arguably offers the most diverse set of experiences of any state in the U.S. But the people there are living in fantasy land on borrowed time.
