I don't think people realize that the far left passing lane is actually based on principles of safety. To the extent that passing on the right side of a vehicle is actually illegal (with laws permitting the overtaking of a vehicle on the right under certain circumstances) in some US states and many European countries.

The idea is that it is dangerous to suddenly need to break while attempting to overtake a vehicle. So cars driving in the passing lane (or merging into the passing lane) should only have to worry about vehicles behind them, and vehicles in cruising lanes should only have to worry about vehicles in front of them. It is safer and easier to monitor vehicles coming from your rear on the left side of your vehicle while attempting to merge.

This is what I do as well. Except if I am doing 80-85 and a car blows by me doing 100+ in which case I call State patrol and tell them my location and to be on the lookout for a whatever color vehicle driving like a maniac ahead. Three times I have driven 5-10 miles to see the a-hole pulled over. Love it! And GFY if you have a problem with that because NOBODY should ever be doing over 95mph on our public roads. You want to go 10,15,20 mph over.....whatever......we all are guilty of that sometimes. If you are one of the lead foots who think it's fine to do 30-40+ over the limit.....GFY and I hope you get taken to jail before you kill someone.

If you think it is worth the effort to flash your lights instead of drift over with a miniscule amount of effort to pass, when presumably absolutely no one else is on the road but you two, and then after all that wake up the next day and bitch about it on this site, you might be a douchebag.

There was nowhere to drift over to. The guy was already hogging the left lane.

So you speeding isn't wrong but others speeding warrant a call to the cops?
Quite the hypocrite you are.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the post of the Thread.
Not pointed at all, just truth. There is a real basic behind the usage of lanes. Probably invented by the Germans in the 1930's. In Europe some countries, notably Finland- which costs $1200 for a DL + 6mo of classes, require learning to pass on mountain roads, and passing in curves. They are taught advanced driving and road concepts. Now we are far ahead of most countries, but truth is it's really easy to drive here.
My drivers test was literally, back out of the angle spot, turn right on Chateau, turn right on West Esplanade, turn right on Village, then angle park. Congrats, done.
Stupid easy.

Yes Speeding is illegal, but speeding is based on a arbitrary number that actually changes constantly, while the rules of lane usage are fixed constants.

Anyone who drives faster than him is obviously a maniac and borderline suicidal.

Same or slower is ok...

This is my first question. If I'm passing someone or someone is blocking me in front, I'm not speeding up or moving for you because you think you need to go fast as hell.

That said, there was a guy and his girl in an Audi convertible on 65 coming back from Birmingham yesterday that just rode the left lane casually at 60 mph. 6 or 7 cars passed him on the right side and the guy still wouldn't get over, that guy is a dickhead.

I disagree with your practice but not your statement. I'm fine with 85 (and now in Texas it just feels weird to Speed, with 80-85 mph limits) and feel that 90+ is that point where it's too dangerous as braking and control are a lot more dangerous at those speeds. Especially when you see a rinky dink three color car doing it, or something with body damage, no telling when they will over correct a lane change and cause a bad accident.
I won't fink on someone for just speeding, but swerving or really actual aggressive driving, sure I'll dial *lsp.
I generally stick to 10mph over as well.
I am guilty of quick burst here and there, but I never maintain it.

Nope. People in Texas will pull over onto the shoulder to let others pass on two lane roads. Not sure about 4 lanes+ but it has always been this way there for as long as I have been driving.

This is a practice that I applaud for Texas . . . but Louisiana does not have the money to put in the wide shoulders that Texas has. It is also nice that a lot of back roads in Texas add the occasional third lane for passing in one direction so you can get around slower moving traffic when the shoulder is not adequate.

Same. I only use the left lane for passing. I never sit in it for no reason. I drive about 10 over the speed limit generally -- 5 if Waze says there's a cop, 15 if I get comfortable. If I'm going 10MPH over the speed limit and I'm passing up a line of slow 18wheelers who are in the right lane (AND I have my blinker on making it clear I will be getting into the right lane as soon as I pass them), get off my arse.

The left lane is for passing. It does not mean I have to start going 90MPH because you're behind me wanting to do that. I am passing. And when I pass, I will move over. Deal with it.

I think people in Louisiana believe the left lane is for leisure drives.

In other states, it's mostly just the truckers that refuse to follow lane usage guidelines. In Louisiana, it's the whole state.

"Camping" implies driving in the left lane when you aren't passing vehicles. If the cars you originally moved into the left lane to pass were "long gone" then why were you driving in the left lane? The left lane isn't the "fast lane", it's the passing lane.

Ultimately you're both breaking the law (in the case of this thread).

I've done plenty of highway driving around the southeast, and truckers are by far the best at following the rules as a group.

If you can't get along with 99% of open road truck drivers (i'll exclude city truck drivers), then you are doing something very wrong.

I agree, but there are so many trucks out there that that one percent seems like a lot on the road.

I've noticed the exact opposite as far as left lane camping goes. They are some of the worst offenders.

They have Slower Traffic Keep Right signs on some stretches of highways here in Texas. Unfortunately they are usually by the right lane.

It's a simple rule that keeps traffic moving more efficiently and safely.

I would suggest that you are doing something wrong. Every person that has said this to me in person needed to work on their highway driving skills.

I average 50k or so highway miles per year for the past 10 years and have rarely had a problem with trucks (percentage wise). I also drive fast enough to get reported, apparently.

They get shamed on teh CB for doing it, so I doubt that.
