Got a decent normal consulting engineering gig out of college and was very fortunate to work for some great guys who taught me a lot. Ended up getting assigned to a staffing contract for a state agency and making an impression. I did not know or have any connections to any of the folks I have encountered in my career.

I now work for the guy I reported to as a contractor at the state. I manage the operations and maintenance of some pretty impressive civil infrastructure in New Orleans and I find my job extremely rewarding.

I posted on facebook about my graduation (M.Ed). A family friend said that the company he works for (General Electric) would be hiring safety guys. He pointed me to the online application. I completed it, got an interview, and got hired.

I work for GE Renewables, building wind turbines. I am a field EHS Manager.

Went to my local Air Force recruiting office and told them I'd like to join the Air Force and 18 years later, I'm still happily employed.

Networked as a bartender in a nice bar toward the end of college and a little after. An older lady came in one day for lunch and we hit it off talking about my future plans. She got me an interview with my now company. Went to two interviews and they "kept my name on file."

Got my first full time job about 6 months later, stayed there for 6 months before I got a call from my now company for another interview/ job offer. Started at the bottom and worked my way up. Within 4 years our company has grown aggressively and the opportunities for upward mobility have also been aggressive.

It was really a blessing to get the job offer having only a business degree and no connections to the oil field whatsoever, and having interviewed for the company right at a year before. They really did keep my name on file.

Did you get the job all by yourself or did you have help?

Of course, you will almost always have help. That being said, I left my family's business and started over - no connections. I started as a busboy (bottom of the pile bushole), worked hard waiting tables and tending bar while in college, made connections, received an offer because someone knew I had the work ethic and decent scholastic achievement. Jobs got better during my career. Ultimately, Headhunters placed me 3 times at bigger, better gigs. Happy ever after.

PS: I dislike your insinuation that nobody gets anywhere without family/friend or unearned credits.

Well I am not happily employed.

Would have rather stayed on unemployment. What a stupid decision.

Early in my career I established a reputation for being accountable and dependable. Due to various factors I've moved around in the workforce somewhat and have developed a diverse skillset along with many contacts. That path has led me to the job I have today which pays me more than I'm worth for doing virtually nothing. Put me in the happily employed category.

Did a buddy/family friend get you a job, or did you just randomly get selected by submitting a resume to something online?

All I had (and needed) was my degree and work experience. Kicked arse in the interview, been here ever since.

No way anybody on here is happy with their job. I don't believe that exists unless your Hugh Hefner or the worlds most interesting man.

Got the offer earlier this week. I worked my dick off since May of 2012 to get to this point. Now it's here.

I got a job at a hospital through an internship connection that I established in undergrad. From there I transferred to a project under the corporate health system that ran the hospital. I was promoted twice, then a portion of our project was absorbed by another health system, luckily I was chosen as part of the absorption. I picked up a masters degree along the way which helped in getting the promotions.

I worked hard for the past few years in my field and networked at much as I could. I put myself out there and worked for free to get more experience under my belt.

I had found a job in development and put in my notice at my last job. My current boss found out I was leaving and she reached out to me to see if I was 100% sold on my new job or if I would be interested in working for her. I always wanted to work for her so I jumped on it. I thoroughly enjoy going into work every day even though the content intimidates me.

Found out about a possible opening from a current employee. Contacted the director, interviewed and a position was created to meet my needs. I love my job.

It wasn't easy, but I got to work early, stayed late, and focused on how to improve daily.

When none of that worked, I slept my way to middle management.
