pretty much the same as when some flick a can of dip and let their finger hit it to make some noise before grabbing a dip.
I have an extra ,25 ounces in my Red Seal to pack. It's a process but it only lasts 1/6th longer than normal.

It's still annoying as frick
Where are you hanging around that you see this a lot anymore?
I mean, so few people smoke these days that I can hardly recall the last time I've seen someone do that, such that if I do, it would almost feel nostalgic.

I smoked until my 40’s. Everyone I know packs them before opening the package. If you don’t pack the tobacco the cherry(lit part)will flick off with the ash and you’ll have to light again.

I smoked from 19-32, never packed my smokes and never had an issue with that
I don’t ever see the smokers pack their smokes

Look baw, I got my traditions... like when I tilt my head slightly to the right to light my joe
Think of it like a batter in the box... a little dig in here, glove adjustment there, practice swing that isn't worth a damn, and we're off

To be fair, some people pack them every time they reach for a joe. That's retarded.

There are lots of cigarette smoking behaviors that I enjoyed when I smoked, I still miss them

I don't understand why making it burn slower and having to pull harder is a good thing.

I don't like being around people when they smoke. First, I just don't like the smell and once I smell it, it seems like I will have that smell around me the whole day. Not to mention, it's not really that great for anyone to breath in second hand smoke, but if I am around someone who is smoking.. And they are opening up a pack of cigarettes, them packing it by hitting it on their hand does not bother me at all.
It's not really distracting or anything.

When I was doing my quitting I would walk outside for 7 minutes and literally just mime like I was smoking. It would help

Its one of the noises that drives me crazy

They're packing the tobacco down toward the filter.
Ostensibly. It’s actually a dog-whistle white trash mating call.

I didn't have that problem

I recall tapping a box of Marlboro reds on a desk or table before unwrapping them.
I smoked cigarettes from my sophomore year in HS until I was a couple of months shy of my 65th birthday. I sure did enjoy it. For some reason I smoked my last cigarette on the golf course on July 2, 2016. I still miss them from time to time (especially after court appearances and while playing golf) but I don't want to go back to smoking. I do still love the smell of a newly lit cigarette.
As an aside, in The Beatles song, "I'm Looking Through You" you can hear a tapping sound throughout the song after the first line is sung. It is Ringo tapping a pack of cigarettes on his hand.

I smoked 2 packs a day for about 7-8 years, my last couple years I was down to 1 pack a day. I still had stomach aches, depression, night sweats, bad dreams, huge cravings, insomnia, irritability, etc due to nicotine withdrawal. You can still have physiological addiction in under 2 packs a day.

This. It was absolutely unbelievable when I was smoking.
If you "packed" a new pack. It was a given that someone would pop up within the next 5 seconds and say "Hey man, mind if I bum one?"
Yes mfer, I do mind. So glad I quit.

Fire up a nail was used when I was young. I fired up so many nails that they won’t be able to open the coffin to get me in it. And yeah, used to pack new smokes to tighten up the tobacco to the filter, kept them from crimping or breaking.
