Imagine having no job and no one relying on you for anything, ever. No set schedule or place to be, ever. A lot of these folks live their entire lives on a whim with all the free time in the world. They're in no hurry to move or to accommodate anyone. For many, getting that soda and that bag of chips will be the highlight of their day. That's where this lack of "situational awareness" comes from.

Everything you listed is exactly why I only get gas at Costco
People still frick up the line at Costco. The hoses are long enough to reach either side of your vehicle so just get in the shortest line and move on. Then everyone plays leapfrog to get gas instead of waiting on both cars to finish and then pull up to the furthest pump.

If you are getting gas at a very busy gas station and then feel the need to go inside to get your bag of chips and liter of cola (you did earn it for standing up for those 3 minutes), please move into a parking spot.
What? That's not happening.
I will clip the pump lever down to go inside while it's pumping.

OP would lose his shite if he ends up at a busy Buc-ees. People will park their car at the pump & be inside for 20 mins

I realize getting in and out of your car is very strenuous and requires much effort, but for the sake of all humanity, I politely ask that you and others take the 2 seconds to look around at your surroundings, see the multiple cars waiting to get their $5 gas, and pull the 30 ft up to a parking spot.
You were so triggered by this that you had to come here to vent?

lack situational awareness
No, I doubt those people lack the situational awareness regarding the implications of what they’re doing.
When I pull some a-hole move like that, I’m fully aware I’m inconveniencing you. I just don’t give a frick

There is a reason for this behavior and it involves necessary lack of a bank account and govt cheese.
I know it sucks, but stay away from hoodrat filling stations if you don't want to wait.

this is one of my biggest pet peeves. Especially when there's plenty of open parking spaces and cars lined up waiting for gas

I'm usually big on courtesy and being aware of your surroundings, especially at the grocery store, where everybody seems to be a clueless zombie. But, there is zero chance I am going to try to navigate a jammed gas station lot to pull into a parking spot for 3-5 minutes while I get my Diet Dew.

I stopped at Buccees last weekend and there was plenty of pump parking going on

Yes. Obviously.

Cool. You suck.

Slight off topic, but how fat and lazy do you have to be to go back in and sit in your car while you pump gas? Especially when you are filling up a car.
On topic, frick these people. Be a decent human being and pump gas, pull in to an open spot, and then go in and get your Mountain Dew, cigarettes, and hot dog at 6am. Every time I pull into my local gas station, over 1/2 the cars are at the pump with no drivers.

If they would keep paper in the receipt printer I wouldn’t have to go inside to get it.

Very much this.
I avoid filling-up in my hometown, whenever possible.
Not only will everything happen that the original poster describes, but one would also be subjected to loud, offensive music and more than likely be asked for money.

And pull up to the second free pump, not the first... a-hole
This is based entirely on who was there before you and what side your cap is on. The person you perceive as being an a-hole for not pulling up to the second pump, may have been behind someone else until that person pulled away.
That's like getting pissed at someone for parking over the line when the person next to him initially parked over the line causing a chain reaction of bad parking jobs.

This was a "nice" station right off the interstate. Nothing "hoodrat" about it.
12 pumps all occupied
Only 2 of those pumps were actively filling their vehicles
Rage

I wonder how close to 1 the ratio is of people who park at the gas pump to go inside and people who don't return their cart at the grocery store.

Let me sidebar into People lack situational awareness-Subway edition: Couple in-front of me in one transaction asked the details of a buy one get one coupon, asked what the bread selection was, made special request for mayo to be put on before the bread was toasted, asked for a recommendation on the cheese for one sandwich, asked for recommendation for sauce on another, asked for spinach from a specific container, argued the price, asked why she wasn't getting the more expensive one for free, doubled back to ask for more napkins. This location that can run through a line with ease during a lunch rush went from these 2 jackasses, me and one other customer to a 15 person line before they were done this one transaction. all the while these 2 are completely unaware they are slowing down an entire fast food restaurant.
