People can’t name countries on a world map

This was a segment on jimmy kimmel recently. Pretty sad if you ask me. As an educator myself, I feel offended that past educators have failed the youth as they have in these ignorant sandovadriants.

I work in the biomedical field and am shocked that so many of my peers are so ignorant when it comes to history and geography. Even though they’re smart they don’t care if they don’t think it’s relevant.

Geography class at LSU.
First day, professor tells us to draw the 7 continents and label them. He actually said 7.
Girl of Vietnamese descent drew 5. She labeled Asia as China, and left South America completely off.
She wrote America on US and Canada, and labeled Mexico.
Also had a Europe and East Europe on there.
She did get Australia right though.
Most shocking to me was the China label...
And that she had TOPS.

I find this true across many more subjects than history and geography.
For instance I don't care about the finer points of trading stocks. I screw around and do some, but mainly for fun. I pay someone when it is time to get serious.

I mean, geography should be common knowledge. Most schools spend a significant amount of time in elementary and middle school on the subject and it's important to know.
Knowledge of stock and bond trading really has no reason to be common knowledge and it way to specialized. Even your most knowledgeable trader still has steep learning curves when they branch out of their specialty

Don’t ask me to point out a single -Stan. It’ll be a complete stab in the dark

Depends on how complex of geography we are talking.
Then again, some people don't carry around trivial knowledge. They fill those holes with more important things.

I think I could placd a pretty high number of countries on a map. I can get some of the. AIM rivers and I have a pretty good idea of temperate climate, but geography can get fairly specific.
I would expect someone to be able to place many counties on the map but detailed geography is a bit much

There are actually a lot of websites that let you show off your knowledge. A simple screen capture would prove it.

I know a chick that was unaware we fought Japan in WW2. She knew of Pearl Harbor getting attacked by someone, but that was the extent of her knowledge about the entire Pacific portion of the war.

Knew a girl that thought Abraham Lincoln was president in the 1900s.

Why do teachers always get the blame?
Some kids just don't care to learn or retain information they learn in school.

Nobody needs to really. All that's needed is basic investment theory, which isn't that difficult. Most people do just fine with buying a target retirement fund. Stock trading directly is largely wasted effort.

Sorry teach...but if I don’t need to know geography for my job, I simply don’t give a shite.

I had a professor in college start his semester off with 3 questions.
"Class, point west"
Most of the class pointed to the left. (Definitely west)
"Class, point east"
Most of the class pointed right.
(Agreed, its east)
"Class, point north"
The ones that pointed straight up were kicked out.
I've never loved an institution of higher learning more than that day

We've been at war in Afghanistan for nearly 20 years and bin Laden was killed in Pakistan (not to mention, 6th most populated country in world) but you can't ID either? It's troubling that so many citizens profess their support for the troops but can't even be bothered to understand the conflicts we send them into.
