I agree that most lack adequate geography and history knowdlege. The excuse is why do I need to know this? Well why do you need to know anything, being a well rounded person improves youmas a whole.
I bet the same idiots that cannot place the countries on a map CAN name and place the tattoo's on celebs like Bieber and the Kartrashcans.

There are too many Americans that can’t label all 50 US states much less countries of the world.
Most Americans couldn't label 20 states, I'll bet.

North America consists of Canuckleheads, Mexicans and the United Morons of America

First attempt, I only got 94 countries and I was rated below average. Sporcle people are serious about their games...

When I was in Iraq the chaplain offered a tour of the home of Abraham. A guy in my platoon raised his hand and asked "Abraham Lincoln?".

I only got 85. Should have been 87 but it wouldn't give me Colombia because my southern arse was spelling it Columbia. Also couldn't get Leichtenstein spelled right.
In my defense, half of these country names are totally different than what we learned in school during the cold war. I think I did pretty good.

Same, I attempted to enter many spellings for Liechtenstein and couldn't get it right.

Most of those people questioned were ignorant liberals.

I got 114 and was rated "average." Most of what I missed was the fricking Pacific and Caribbean Islands and Africa. People are apparently crushing that test.

You have to remember many people are taking this quizzes multiple times which are why the scores are higher.

I've had plenty of black students who thought that MLK freed the slaves.

You actually think that is real? And you are questioning the intelligence of others? And you're an educator?
Damn, our country is fricked.

You aren’t very smart yourself if you’re just realizing the bubble America is known to live in compared to other country’s awareness of ourselves and others.
That said, who gives a frick? It’s like asking to recall all the state capitals. I don’t think I could

They take it on faith we are there for good reasons.
Wave flag.
We are there for 20 years.
Weird.

I see lots of comments along the lines of, It doesn't effect me, so I don't give a frick.
I think previous generations put a lot of value on knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Many of today's generation would rather google it than learn it or retain it. The problem I see with that approach is that many everyday decisions are made by drawing on the database of retained knowledge a person has accumulated in their lives. You may or may not have the time or means to google it before having to make that decision. So while the internet may be getting smarter, people are getting dumber.

People never could.
Most of Africa are different names from when you first looked at a map.
Where's Guyana?
Is inner Mongolia further south than Manchuria?
Is Aruba closer to Venezuela or to Trinidad, or Tobago?

Why do teachers always get the blame? Some kids just don't care to learn or retain information they learn in school.
Its not the teachers, its the entire American education system along with a culture that doesn't value knowledge. Public libraries are empty and the humanities educators have become the part time job of high school athletic coaches. Standards have been lowered to increase the quantity of high school and college graduates, but the quality has suffered.
