Plus Prohibition. Everything sucked and you couldn’t even stop at the bar for a legal drink.

I’d have rather fought in both those world wars in exchange for having to see drag tranny kids story time at the library being normalized

Imagine being a Russian born around 1890:

Grow up under a repressive monarchy in a barely industrialized economy

Fight in WWI, watch your nation get its arse kicked and lose tons of territory

Fight in the Bolshevik Revolution and resulting Russian Civil War, see your country torn apart for five years before Communists destroy their opponents

Live under Stalinism, go through Soviet famine of early 1930's

Survive devastating German invasion, possibly live under Nazi collaborationist government

Work to rebuild a nation destroyed by war again

Live under authoritarian Communist rule in fear of secret police

Go through the Cold War constantly afraid of a global nuclear war and an "inevitable" NATO invasion of the USSR

Die in Commie block apartment

I’d say Ukraine during that period or China circa WW2 is about as bad as it gets.

Only career military served in WW1 & WW2. The cutoff age for draftees in WW2 was around 34/35. The youngest WW1 vets would have been in their early 40s when the U.S. entered WW2.

There were men who served in WW2, Korea and Vietnam. I saw one working as a reserve cop for Berkeley P.D. at a Cal game. He was wearing a Combat
Infantry Badge with 2 stars. Very rare.

The fascinating TV series, The Knick, was practically a horror show/documentary depicting life around the turn of the century.

Pre-antibiotics
Pre-sterilization/pre-gloves
Primitive anesthesia (ether)/butchershop surgeries
Experimental surgeries
Tooth-pulling procedure as treatment for mental illness
Unregulated cocaine/opium use developing addicts, who then go to rehab and get treated with heroin
Squalid tenement/working conditions leading to (now-preventable) illnesses easily spreading (Typhoid Mary)

Not bad. But they live during those times and got reports of it. Much like very little of the crap going on today directly affects us. But we still hear about it. With TV and social media on a much larger level.

I guess we should remind ourselves when bad things happen today. Bad things have always been happening.

They were born on easy street compared to millennials. No one has had it worse. Just ask them.

The men were old enough to fight in WWI and young enough to fight in WWII. Damn.

You didn’t have to be very old to fight in WW1…I think it was basically all hands on deck.

ETA: Generals Patton, Rommel and countless others fought in both wars.

My grandfather was a WWI veteran and had to register for the WWII draft at the age of 46. Wonder what the cut off age to register was?

When I was a kid, their was a lady that would babysit me. She was born in 1902. Even though I was a kid in the seventies, I still asked her questions about how life was for her growing up. Very fascinating stories she would tell.

My dad was born 1896 - mom in 1907

Both worked their asses off their entire lives. Dad had to quit school in 3rd grade to help take care of family after his mother died. Mom quit in 8th grad to go to work to earn money for family.

All 3 of their children went to college.

I am so proud of what they did. I am not man enough to have made it in that age - so thankful for their sacrifices.

Their example is what I think of when I see all these modern idiots thinking they have been 'deprived' or 'disrespected' or 'expected to work'

Thanks mom and dad.

If you lived to be 100 you’d have seen the progression of the automobile, radio, television, telephone all the way to landing on the moon and the internet.

Pretty amazing life honestly. Probably the best century to live through even with the horrors in it.
