Search efforts are underway for a Pennsylvania grandmother who fell into a massive sinkhole while searching for her missing cat.
Elizabeth Pollard, 64, was reported missing by concerned family members about 1am on Tuesday who believe she disappeared while searching for her cat, Pepper, in Unity Township, Westmoreland County.
Troopers found her car parked behind Monday's Union Restaurant with her five-year-old granddaughter still inside a little over an hour after the alarm was raised. A sinkhole was then located just feet away.
'We at that point in time realized that this could be a very bad situation,' Steve Limani, a state trooper, told CNN.
The discovery triggered search and rescue efforts to find Pollard with the assumption that she fell down the hole.
The sinkhole is similar to the size of a manhole on the surface but gets much wider below ground - posing greater challenges for search efforts.
But the area is dotted with old coal mines - leading troopers to believe that it was not there before she began searching for Pepper and was most likely created when she was walking around.
Officers noted how she may have gone missing as early as 5pm - the last time she was seen by customers at the restaurant while looking for Pepper.

Thanks, I needed a fear unlocked this morning.

That is a sad story.
I was reading another article about it. She was a hard worker who cared for everyone, even her cat. Her family is hopeful they can recover her body. They want to cremate her and place her ashes in a trophy container on the fireplace mantel with a saying “grandma really urned it”.

Depends on the situation but its somewhat rare to even recover bodies from sinkholes, let alone alive. Especially considering it's they said it's in coal mining area.

“…and was most likely created…”

No way that lady is still alive. It's 20 degrees up there this morning w/20 MPH winds and there is snow moving in tonight and they are in the Laurel Highlands so they are going to get more snow than the rest of Greater Pittsburgh due to elevation.

Would H2S be a concern in a sinkhole situation?
I'd imagine it would, but am curious if anyone knows more.

So will this be referred to as the Granny Cranny cave tragedy?

Pepper definitely had something to do with this. Cats are real assholes

I reckon it’s easy to find humor in situations when we don’t know the victim, and I am as guilty of it as anyone.
But in this case, this headline really disturbs me. My elderly mom loves her cats and the thought of her having a tragic accident while trying to help one absolutely terrifies me. Also reading that the lady’s five year old grand child was in the car just breaks my heart.
Sorry to be a Debby Downer, and no judgement toward those who do find humor. Just had to get that off my chest
