Logging data is more art than science. A good employee can stick his finger into the air and tell you what the correct reading is. I'm not going to question his data.
That said, if you look me in the eye and tell me the hydrogen sulfide number is under the limit and the plant smells like the devil's own a-hole, I'm going to fire you.

This. How else do you become a scratch golfer, but still have time to hunt, fish, watch games?
Can't believe how many people don't know the term "pencil whipped" and yes it is a valid reason for immediate termination. The problem is figuring out who started it when it's done across the board.

Labworks automates the composition breakdown of your grabs/samples/pots and connects to the GC.

I fired several folks for pencil whipping at my last job. Do your job or GTFO. Won't abide laziness.

We have people that do it and bosses know they do. Their reading sheets will be blank all week then at the end of their shift its all filled out. They must have a great memory to remember a weeks worth of readings.

It depends on your race, gender, and sexual orientation. HR will determine the next course of action dependent on these three elements.
If you are white male….. you’re screwed.

Ops hates intelatrac. It takes a human and turns them into a robot. I can see the benefit, but also the negative in removing focus from potential issues in the fast brain to: "gotta scan my bar code for the lubrimist".
Also, I've only seen two operators get shite canned for pencil whipping. One almost killed three people in a forced draft fin fan he didn't lock out, and another didn't do his rounds for the third time. He got hired at lyondell after he got fired and proceeded to blow up a superheater and almost kill himself, another, and cause a 9 month shutdown.

All they did was move him off my shift. He’s now a supervisor
well it seems like his way of doing things is much more successful in the eyes of your supervisor then yours.

We had an operator that pencil whipped his round sheet and then xeroxed several copies to use on sibsequent shifts. Canned his lazy arse.

Funny how you can read a reply on the OT and realize who the person is..

Yes. It's a character issue. They would be gone.
EDIT: They fired themselves.

40 years ago catching a problem operator pencil whipping logs and laboratory analysis was a doable termination because the data was critical to safe operation of the plant. Still done today???
You mean getting paid to do a job, and then not doing it? Yeah, prolly.

Absolutely not, i’m a console operator at a large oil refinery where rounds and samples are routinely pencil whipped. Now, it’s less often in relation to product specs but things like caustic utilization, pump status, steam conductivity are routinely boiler housed. In my experience, at my place of employment, you have to try to get fired and they have to build a case against you that could last months or even years of issues.
My plant is more like this too. It’d have to be particularly egregious—like pencil whipping air monitoring readings that get someone killed.

we lost one a few years ago for pencil whipping. The pencil whip glossed over a valve that should've been closed and resulted in a spill. Operator lied about the rounds and thats why he got fired.

There was a lot of pencil whipping going on at Texas city by all levels of the organization.

Depends on the plant… my old plant absolutely. A lot of it was field gauges and manual operation. An honest round was necessary for product spec. At my new plant everything is run from the console basically. A field round is just for triple or quadruple verification against in house indicators. I could care less if those could pencil whipped, I care more about when it’s nut cutting time and they can do something quickly and safely.

In Golf it means that other player whipped you because he wrote lower scores on the card than he obtained. Golf uses that short pencil.
I think plant workers may have borrowed the term, but it’s not as relevant.

Who hasn't heard of "pencil whipping" data or calibration checks for ISO audits, etc?
And yes, it's wrong.
At work and golf scrambles.
