The founding pastor of our church used to talk about what he called "shoot" cussing and to think about what the intention of your words are rather than the actual words.

He was not an advocate of using them and never did that I ever heard.

I guess you just gotta define unwholesome. The Greek word in scripture is sapros, meaning anything not edifying where edification is needed. Cussing is a human construct. Curse words differ over cultures and generations. Curse words can be a sin if they tear down rather than edify.

That brings us to Romans 14:20 and 1 Corinthians 8:13. Paul says it's a sin to do anything that would cause someone to stumble in their faith. So if you proclaim yourself a Christian and pepper your conversations with obscenities and it causes someone to question their faith you are committing a sin. Pastors above all men should not curse for this very reason.

I once went into my local church and yelled "frick the devil." I was promptly ushered out. Apparently criticizing the devil was not allowed.

If the word has the same intent than what is the point? Words aren't specifically magic compared to other words.

about what he called "shoot" cussing

Probably meant “shoot” instead of shite, but I initially read it in kayfabe with shoot cussing being “bullshite” as opposed to working cuss words like “bullspit”

Very stupid.
No cussing during message/sermon/homily out of reverence.

Cussing is fine in person.

Cussing can be done well in a book, but it’s hard to pull off.
Francis Spufford pulls it off well in Apologetic.

language is inherently amoral. We as humans assign the meaning. My parents thought "dang" was a curse word, no one thinks that today. The same with "gosh dang" or "oh my goodness." They believed the intent of the word/phrase as the same as cursing.

There are three firm rules that have never let me down to this point in life:

1. Never trust a man who doesn't cuss at least a little.

2. Never trust a person who smiles all the time.

3. Be very leery of any woman who owns a pet bird of any kind.

It's hard to take a grown man that can't say bullshite seriously.
