At least some passengers aboard a deadly Southwest Airlines flight have received $5,000 checks with “sincere apologies” from the carrier.

The airline issued the payments after a Tuesday flight from New York City to Dallas was rocked by an engine explosion in midair, killing one passenger. The crippled jet made an emergency landing in Philadelphia.

In a letter accompanying the checks, Southwest said the payment was a goodwill gesture for the ordeal, CNN reported.

“We value you as our customer and hope you will allow us another opportunity to restore your confidence in Southwest as the airline you can count on for your travel needs,” the letter said, according to recipient Kamau Siwatu. “In this spirit, we are sending you a check in the amount of $5,000 to cover any of your immediate financial needs.”

Siwatu was among three aboard the flight to confirm receiving the letter. They also got a $1,000 voucher for travel on Southwest.

That pilot and staff deserve a bonus, life or death situation and they were absolutely phenomenal.

Actually, SW Airlines Insurance will probably pay her family over 7 figures without there even being a negotiation

I love it when legal settlements come disguised as good will.

I bet Southwest is going to do a lot for that woman's family. She was the first passenger to die on a Southwest flight. You know the execs are pissed that's gone.

I guess this is to avoid any lawsuits, but I don't understand why people, who were not injured, would try to sue.

They landed where they were suppose to right? If not, the only thing I would expect is to not have to pay to get where I was going to.

Unfortunate events happen. The pilot did everything she possibly could do, to make sure it was an as safe landing as possible. It is horrible that there was one death, but everyone else should just be happy they were able to get to contact their families and tell them they were okay.

Mental anguish....

Imagine if you were the person seated behind her and watched her lifeless body flopping against your window like a rag doll

Lulz... My letter back would simply be " I'm gonna need more than that"

Hell it would be hard for me to get back on a plane after and experience like that..

The mental anguish and life effect burden actually makes sense in this case for uninjured passengers

There are likely people that will never be able to fly again due to trauma and pure fear, which def changes your life quality

I pretty much hate this mindset, but I’m sure many who were not drastically affected by this experience will go this route in order to make a quick buck off of a tragic event.
