It baffles me that parents complain so often about room and board costs. It should come as no surprise that rent and food for an adult are large expenses. I don't see a problem if a young adult is expected to cover all or some of their own food and shelter costs.
My kids (10 & 8 grade) are fortunate we have saved $30k each for college and a portion will be covered by my GI Bill (transferred to them as a retention incentive) and FL Bright Futures for tuition. They know that in state is covered but private or out of state would be on them and better as a grad school option using GI Bill. State schools in FL are super competitive so they may have to settle on a second choice even with near perfect GPAs. My 10th grader is already behind because of a couple of Bs in HS courses taken in Jr high and a couple of Bs as freshman (AP Human Geography and honors Algebra). Seems crazy he has to get nearly perfect GPA moving forward just to get into flagship state school despite completing 4 core HS courses in Jr High.

Respectfully disagree, I am about to pay mine off and it built more character in me for sure, to work for everything I have. I have family, nephews and one group has everything handed to them and another group works for everything. The latter group are more respectful and understand the meaning of a dollar. I used to be a bit jealous of kids who had everything paid for, but now as an adult seeing my friends spend way too much on their kids, I am glad to not have any... it all worked out in the end, and I did it myself. My parents just didnt have the money, but they were good parents, also my dad passed away while I was in college. All of that made me who I am and I respect kids today that make it without being handed everything.

—agree. It was $275 a semester when I went to LSU as a commuter.

Getting support for my education was a massive financial blessing provided to me which I hope can extend generationally.
Supporting children through college isn’t mutually exclusive with teaching wisdom and discipline.

Well, now wait a minute.
Do they learn all about gay sex? Like, in descriptive anatomical detail? Are they recruited into LGBTQ clubs and encouraged to be trans and change their name, all without telling their parents?
There are some types of education you will only get in public schools.
Now reading, writing, arithmetic, nah. I think the percentage of high school graduates who are illiterate is still about 1 in 5.
But sexual deviancy? You'll not find a better place to learn all about and experience that than public schools in America.
