I started a college fund for my daughter when she was 4. If she doesn’t go, she will have it when she turns 21. If she needs it, I don’t want money to stop her from going to the school she wants.

didn't say parents shouldn't help their kids or pay for college if they want to. I'm saying the kids aren't entitled to have their parents pay for college and there shouldn't be an expectation that parents pay for college.

The OP didn't claim that. This all stemmed from one poster stating no parent owes their child a college education all because the OP said parents are failing their children. His primary lament is that these parents are woefully unprepared and uninformed when it comes to guiding their children. He's correct, unfortunately.

No, they should not means test them, but that's what the less fortunate will scream for.
Y'all are preaching to the choir, by the way. My parents were exactly like the ones he's describing. Well-meaning, sure, but they were not cut out for the process. I'll still made it through 4 years under grad and then 1.5 years grad school with minimal debt in engineering. The issue is not everyone is able to do that.

My kids off campus apt. in Tally is freaking 1450 per month and they live with three others paying the same. I have freaking argued with her and her mom about this so many times I gave up. I could be renting a damn house in a gated community in tally for what they are all playing.

Today a college education is equivalent to HS or less, you are a bum if you dont help your kid with college esp if they are motivated.

Tell the kid to take a year off (which will turn into more, read on) and join the Military for about three years. That qualifies you for the GI Bill. Free college and all the other stuff vets get like VA, a deal on home loans, etc etc.

Gen X here. I paid for every penny of my undergrad and post graduate school. Applications, tuition, registration, my first apartment; I did all that. Parents helped with groceries and co-signed student loans, and vehicle/insurance. But parents need to stop coddling their kids. Help and give advice fine. But let them go out and make mistakes and learn to be an adult.

What if your kid wasn’t in school? That’s part of the issue here. We as parents treat our kids like they deserve a nice place to live.
I knew plenty of kids that paid their own way and most of them didn’t walk to campus, they lived in a normal house with 2-3 roommates and drove in. It was cheap as hell. Their house was perfectly normal and not in a ghetto. I’m sure Baton Rouge has plenty of these.
