My kids are too young now, but I hope to make every effort to attend every game. I will only get to enjoy them playing for a short period.

Mine did, too, but I would have understood skipping games in such bustling cities like Franklin, Crowley, Rayne, etc.

I have one kid that plays Football and Tennis (Sophomore), and another that runs track (Junior). Both are varsity, and I do everything I can to make those competitions even when away. Tennis and track can be harder - usually during work hours and usually mid-week. I've been lucky in that my older son competes in 110 and 300 hurdles and some sprint relays, so typically is competing at the very end of the meets, which helps me be able to get there.
Football is typically something I can arrange for almost always (night games, Fridays, not many in a season). I don't judge parents that can't of don't, but I enjoy seeing my kids compete, and I know the kids like seeing me and/or my wife (no pics) there. We did everything we could to make both daughter's (absolutely no pics) Lacrosse and Soccer games as well when they were in HS, even if out of town.
When I was in school, my dad never missed a football game, but didn't make hardly any baseball games home or away because they were usually day games and usually mid-week. Mom would be there if he wasn't.

Some sports are just easier. Football, one game per week on a Friday night (if we are talking high school). Basketball tends to be later in the day, but can be multiple times per week.
Other sports can have flat crazy schedules. Multiple times per week, sometimes during school hours or just after. It's not practical for some people to be at a 4pm game. In baseball, because many fields had no lights, we'd often be playing by 4pm, even if the game was 2 hours away. For tennis and golf, these events would start in the morning. I can't recall when track started, but it had to be in the morning?

If the high school team takes a bus, say two hours away, to compete

Where I am from, it happened a lot. Rural schools endure travel quite a bit. There were only 2 schools in our region within an hour. The rest were 1-2 hours, and a few were over 2. We tore up the Shoney's circuit back in th' day!

My son was the starter for left side of the bench, but I still went to every game of his unless I absolutely couldn't. Distance was never a factor.

My parents went to every single one of my games, unless they had a work commitment or a conflict with my sister's schedule. Home or away.
A couple of years ago, Bonnabel HS played at Chalmette HS, and Bonnabel did not bring their band or their cheerleaders. In addition, there were - maybe - 10 people in the stands on their side of the stadium.
I felt so bad for those kids. It's like a 35 min drive from Kenner to CHS.

My parents never went to a game that was not at ASH. Not even in town, but away games.

Also, i will say that for some sports or music-related activities, my kids didn’t necessarily want me to go. I saw it as they wanted something that was theirs, you know. Their thing, with their team, just for them. They didn’t want me hovering around over everything. I tried to see it as a positive (independence?). But, if i was funding it, and i always was, sometimes i had to say, f that, i’m going!

Not going to lie, I’ll probably go watch football practice through the fence. I hope he enjoys the competition and how hard the coaches are on everyone. Be interesting to see how long he can stay with the QB group.

Evidently you aren't that good at baseball and your parents really wish you would just stick to piano.

Never you can’t miss anything ever or the little bastards will laud it over.
Plus two kinda of sports parents,
The ones that go to almost everything good parents
The ones the go to convenient games bad parents
Or and the ones like me that go to everything but occasionally get thrown out of games for yelling at the idiot incompetent blind Refs so may not see all of the game.
Just do the best you can brother

I took my son to ASH last time we were in town to kick on their practice field. He loved aiming at the coaching tower. I kept telling him not to hit it, but...yea, he kept trying to kick over it.

I rarely played in any games in hs and my parents were always there. I remember one game in Cecilia they missed because my mom got a bad migraine on the way there so they had to turn around. Everything else they were at

my Dad had his own business and it was a pretty big operation, I completely understood that he couldn't make every single game, didn't traumatize me at all, he did what he could, same with my Mom, she taught school and helped my Dad develop/grow his business, plus there were five of us kids

Pretty much the same for me. My grandfather made most of my track meets. My parents did make all my football games.

Depend on sport and/or position?
My son played football and wrestled.
I went to every football game since I actually enjoyed watching him play even though the team in general was pretty meh. He played DT and I had a huge fear that if I missed a game and he got hurt that I would kick myself if I wasn't there.
Wrestling is worse than watching paint dry. It is sit around at a meet all day waiting for the brief window when it is go time. Sure, you can go watch other kids wrestle but that loses it's luster after about the first hour or so. Sadly, my anus was prepped for meets since I competed in BJJ tournaments when I was younger.
