re: Parents- do you make your kid wear a bike helmet?

We go to church with a family that currently has a 9 year old child in the ICU after a scooter accident. Had an epidural hematoma and needed two decompression surgeries and a good chunk of his skull removed. The poor kid hasn't fully woken up yet.

Mandatory at out house.

Only the ones I really liked.

My kids are grown, they always wore helmets as kids, and still do. In high school a guy in my class went down in some gravel, hit his head on a curb. He continued riding a bicycle for the next 35 years, he couldnt drive a car due to the brain damage.

Is that a law in Ascension Parish? I have no idea and my kids don't wear helmets ever.

2 kids within 2 years were hit by vehicles while they were riding their bikes to school. Another was hit by a teen while riding to a friend’s house within the neighborhood.

Sure, helmets protect kids from their own mistakes but they also protect heads from other people’s mistakes.

We were never offered helmets as kids in the 70’s and I don’t know of anyone with injuries that a helmet could’ve prevented.
I think we were more aware of our surroundings and drivers were less distracted obviously.
I never let my kids ride their bikes like id did, meaning everywhere because I, like everyone else my age got scared to let our kids be kids.

I’ve always made my son wear them but that’s because we live in a neighborhood with huge hills.

The other night became a wake up moment, and I hope it helps people to realize that wearing a helmet isn’t just a “soft” thing that kids nowadays do. On Wednesday, my 6 year old son was riding his bike down the neighbors steep driveway and had an accident that involved him flying straight over his handle bars, mouth first into the concrete. We spent 8 hours in the ER and he had oral surgery to remove teeth and suture his gums that could have permanent damage. Why did his mouth get so screwed up? Because he had his helmet on, and while it sucked and was extremely painful, his mouth caught the brunt of the fall instead of his skull. The physicians in the ER said had he not been wearing his helmet they would be treating him for a TBI or worse rather than some dental issues.

My kids will not ride bikes or scooters without helmets ever again.

Hell no, but my kids are 28 and 30ish, I think.

This. Although I didn't always wear a helmet, I would make my kids do it 100%.

Yes...

When I was 7, I lost control of my bike and slammed into a utility pool, gave myself a concussion, spent 3 days in the hospital. If I had a helmet back then, I would’ve been fine...

My son and I were riding the other nigh, he lost control and face planted, needed 5 stitches and 3 sterri strips in his chin... I know a helmet didn’t make a difference in that situation, but when ever it happens again, his head may be involved, who knows. Better to be safe than sorry..
