The fraud allegedly generated hundreds of millions of dollars for the pharmacies and individuals who took part in them.

According to the complaint:

•Advantage Pharmacy received at least $155 million for compound medications from public and private health care insurers between June 6, 2012, and Feb. 28, 2016. World Health and its affiliates received around $120 million, and Medworx was paid at least $130 million.

•TRICARE alone paid more than $161 million to the three pharmacies. TRICARE is the Department of Defense's military health care system.

"Prior to joining Medworx in 2014, Spell earned less than $200,000 a year," the complaint said. "After managing Medworx for only 18 months, he was able to amass assets estimated to be worth more than $12 million."
These muthafrickers deserve life in prison.

Schaar and May will be sentenced by Starrett on Oct. 17, 2017 in Hattiesburg. May faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Schaar faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

If they took millions and only owe back 250k and 5 years in proson, it may have been worth it to them to have committed the crime.

$400m, much of which was paid by the government, for some pain cream to rub on old knees??? Insane.

Looks like the kickbacks are going to be their downfall, but how in the world did all of these payments get by so many people in the government and at the insurance companies before they figured out what was going on?

here ya go. this explains it.

It's rather simple. TRICARE will cover this non FDA approved shite cream. So Cream Marketers seek out people with TRICARE and get them to get the script from . They then send the 'patient' a script often without seeing a Dr, and charge the government up to 15k a script. The physicians who write the scripts get kickbacks.

This is similar to when scooters were being marketed to old people on Medicare regardless of need.

quote:

For several years, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has been chasing down compounding pharmacies and their accomplices nationwide that participate in what one federal prosecutor calls a "systemic fraud" against TRICARE, the healthcare program for members of the armed services and their families. As revealed in a string of civil settlements and criminal convictions, physicians have received kickbacks to write bogus prescriptions for pain cream produced by compounding pharmacies.

These pharmacies use marketing companies to cold-call TRICARE beneficiaries and pitch the use of the creams and how the insurance program covers the cost, according to the Department of Defense website. The marketers collect TRICARE information and the name of the beneficiary's physician over the telephone to generate a prescription, often delivered without an office visit beforehand. TRICARE has been billed as much as $15,000 for a single prescription. The Department of Defense has said that this pain cream gravy train helps explain why its spending on all compounded drugs ballooned from $5 million in fiscal 2004 to $514 million in fiscal 2014.

Word on the street is that those two have turned on the big hitters in the scheme, and have plead guilty to the Feds. It's possible their potential sentences have been reduced in turn for testimony against the people who orchestrated the fraud and brought in the largest windfalls from Tricare.

The list of assets seized is mind-boggling. More indictments and trials to follow.

My neighbor's parents got a pair of free government scooters and gave them to the grandkids for Christmas.

I see them out on the sidewalk playing "old people" when the weather is nice. They love those "scoots," as the kids call them.

Bet your arse there were politicians and insurance company executives involved somehow. It's not like these pharmacies set the price on this stuff. The INSURER decides what they pay. These places exploited it. The insurers knew it. How the hell could they not? What's getting this group in trouble is the kickbacks. That's what people don't understand. The $3000 price tags are what the insurers decided was fair. Without insurance? You can get the same stuff for $60-300. Sometimes less. Does it work? For some things assuming its coming from a legit pharmacy. Is it worth those outrageous prices? Hell no!! But there are oral NSAIDS and muscle relaxers insurers are paying >$1200/month for. Why no fuss? Cause the big money is going to the large manufacturers. Look up full retail prices on Zipsor and Amrix for two examples. And they work, but it's not like either is life saving. But that's what insurance has agreed to pay (many don't).
