My wife's company told her she had to work up to the day she went into labor with no extra breaks or accommodations.

She could have an FMLA case if she wanted to pursue it. My wife had to bring a letter to her principle because of the things they were trying to get her to do.

I don't understand why maternity/paternity leave is such a taboo thing for many businesses. Labor and delivery often equates to surgery for the mother. Not to mention bonding and other support needed with a new baby.

the American will never understand how much better it COULD be because we are constantly pushing ourselves in the name of profit and productivity.... there's a reason most of Europe has a much higher quality of life and longer life expectancy than we do here....

look i love America... wouldn't want to live anywhere else (except maybe Florence, Italy if i was insanely rich, but i digress...), but sometimes adapting to other ideas can be a GOOD thing, and while i don't like everything Europe, there are some very good things going on over there that with a little sacrifice and understanding, would be good for America too...

we have unlimited sick days, which means that people actually take fewer except for the minority. I work with one lady who probably took 25 sick days last year, mostly for one of her sick kids. Another probably took 2 weeks, I think a few of those were "hangover" days.

I took more last year than I have in a while, I had a nasty sinus infection. Probably took 2 full days, and another 2 or 3 half days.

I fully support a mental health day once every 3 months, but I can take a friday off without logging it anytime I want.

Paid Sick Days when you're NOT sick

Like others, I use them for doctor's appointments or if I'm sick. I have vacation and personal days for random days off.

I feel guilty if I use sick time when I'm not sick.

I would get sick somehow to use them. We just have PTO time so we can use it as we please.

A lot of people don't get "personal" days. But this begs the question, what's the point in having 3 different types of PTO? So you use vacation to go on vacation, sick time when you're sick, and personal days every other time. Seems like a company that wants to sell potential employees on how many benefits they offer while dissuading employees on using them.

If I get vacation days and sick days, I'm using the vacation time whenever I want to take multiple days off in a row, and sick days for random days throughout the year.

I laugh at you while I have time for social activities before and after work.

Run clubs/Cross fit in the morning. Happy hours after work.

That life thing... try it out.

7 weeks of paid vacation? Wtf do you do?

I work in Hospital Administration. I get 6 weeks paid vacation a year. Once I hit the 20 year mark (Currently at 16) I will then get 8 weeks of vacation a year. It is glorious. I also have an accrued sick bank of 480 hrs that can be accessed anytime I have a true illness/surgery/etc.

You think working 8-4 five days a week doesn't give me time for working out or going out to the bars?

Yep. And I can break it up three times over a year. I am taking two two week blocks in 2017 and saving a two block for early 2018. My dumbass should have told my wife that I only got four weeks so I could have taken two weeks off and dicked around the city during the day while she thought I was at work.

Yeah, I work there too. A couple of guys on our crew are up to six weeks. I think that's the max our side can get under the current contract. I'm still surviving on a measly two weeks right now--so I'm damn well gonna use my other two weeks of PTO however I please!

If not sick, don't use em. Or use one as a personal day.

20 years with 10 sick days per, took less than 6 total.

They're sick days, not vacation days. Zero respect for people that magically get sick for the exact number of sick days allowed each year. And no pity for the schmucks that use up all of their sick days and then have none left when they get sick for real towards the end of the year.

And you've undoubtedly get sick and are contagious for more than 6 days in a 20 year period.

So a big FU for spreading it around your workplace
