The Liberty Belle, a riverboat with four bars, three outdoor decks and space for 600 guests, has been touted by its operators as a “favorite venue” of New Yorkers who hold parties, fund-raisers and other trendy events on the water. But now it has become yet another symbol of reckless socializing during the pandemic: The boat was used on Saturday to host a party with more than 170 guests, violating state and local social-distancing rules, according to the New York Sheriff’s Office.

Even though the outbreak is mostly under control in New York, city and state officials are expressing growing alarm about the dangers posed by social gatherings where people violate the public health rules imposed to slow the transmission of the coronavirus.

They did a great job keeping it under control by keeping it in nursing homes

How is this different than the protests that they regularly allow to happen?

Trever Holland, the president of the resident association at Two Bridges Tower, an apartment building near the pier, said that on Saturday evening he noticed the Liberty Belle from the window of his 19th-floor apartment. It appeared that people were gathering without masks, he said, and that they were not social distancing.
fricking RAs

So to review New York City law it is shooting up your neighborhood: legal; going on a sunset cruise: illegal.

I’m interested in the outcome of this. I think business owners could win if they challenge it.
It’s become too obvious that crowd restrictions aren’t motivated by public health, since protesting in large crowds is being encouraged.

I was under the impression that once you’re out in the open ocean, anything can happen. No laws. Just you and some tasty treats.

So far we've had ~10,500 gun homicides in 2020.
How many people have died from COVID-19 obtained from a paddle wheel boat party?

That's what is so absurd about this. Recently in NJ there was a large high school house party and a lot of kids tested positive. These kids are criticized by the media and even have the governor speaking against them. The weird thing is though, if the party had been a protest instead of a party in someone's back yard, they'd have been fine. If the exact same kids had, rather than stand around in a back yard and drink beer, gone out into the street with their beers and marched somewhere, it would have been ok (drinking issue aside) under the governor's orders.
I also love how it is virtually forbidden to even try to equate any uptick with the protests. Those have nothing to do with it, but people at beaches and families eating in the parking lot of a chain restaurant are selfish granny killers.

How many times do we have to tell you people? You can't get Covid if you're protesting.
Damn. Everyone knows this.
