Hello wise, all knowing OT. I posted this on the Outdoor Board not too long ago, but hoping to get some more responses and ideas here.

I recently purchased my first home. It's a spec house (think DSLD/Horton). I am OT poor, sorry. In the back, I have a 7' by 24' slab/covered patio. I would like to build this out somewhat, and extend it. I have drops outside for cable and electricity. I would like to have a place for my Green Egg, instead of the crappy table I have now, some counter space, and a sink. I was thinking about bricking this "kitchen" to match the house.

I would also like to extend my patio outward into the yard a little, and would be open to doing this with either pavers or composite decking. Maybe another 10' by 24'. That would leave me with 17' by 24' including the already covered slab. I'd like to have this deck/patio covered also, either with a pergola or some other roof structure. I'd also like to incorporate a fire pit if possible. What I want is kind of a cross between an outdoor kitchen and an outdoor living area. I don't want a full kitchen, but I also don't want a full living area. I also don't want to break the bank entirely, because this is a starter house for me. I do, however, spend a lot of time outside and a lot of time cooking, so I'd like to incorporate something like the above ASAP.

My questions are:

a.) do you think this is possible on a $15k budget?, and

b.) does anyone have something similar they wouldn't mind sharing photos of?

Thanks

I'm in the process of trying to do two right now. One at my new house and one at my camp. Totally different scale. The one at my camp will be 24 x 32 with fire pit, commercial sink, four burner cook top, etc. Designed for 10-12 people to be able to sit around and enjoy while cooking.

The one at my house will be much more along the lines of what you're talking about. My spot is about 12x20 that will be covered. Then another 12 x 20 that will be under a pergola.

I am also hoping for a $15-18k budget for the one at my home. I am looking for used appliances on Craigslist. And I'm hoping to do a lot of the work myself.

Would be happy to share ideas.

Great. That's exactly what I'm looking for - kicking ideas back and forth. What types of appliances are you looking at installing? I had originally hoped to put an ice maker, small fridge, etc., but I think it may blow my budget. So now, I'm just on the Green Egg, which I already have, then a good sink, shelving, and some counter space. I also already have the TV I'm going to mount out there, so I'll save some money on that too.

Someone on the Outdoor Board suggested doing away with the beer fridge, and putting that money into higher quality outdoor/ambient lighting. I like the idea of that.

Great ideas in those threads too. I think most of them are a little bigger than what I'm looking to do.

If you do all the work yourself, with cheap materials, yes. A quality pergola, done in cedar, with cost you your full budget, for that square footage. I see a $40-50K project.

I'd love to be the guy selling you Cedar lumber.

I'm gonna go to a slough on my farm and cut down two cypress trees. Then have them custom cut for .30c per board foot. With labor, I'll have maybe $1500 to $2000 in my pergola.

Lighting and landscaping are the two most underrated parts of a job like this.

I am going with a wine chiller. As I get older, I can't drink beer as much. I think it's the sugar. Gives me a headache and makes me sleepy. I've never been a whisky drinker. So I think this next phase of my life will be dominated my red wine.

I am also going with a small refrigerator and a large upright stainless freezer. I want the focus of my outdoor area to be the cooking of wild game and fish. So I will have all of my game in the freezer. Deep double sink to thaw things out. Prep area for cutting, marinating, etc. Then the Green Egg and a burner eye for frying.

My 12 foot dimension will go against the back wall of a single car garage (weird I know). So my TV will go against that with a sofa facing the TV. Sofa against the bar. So three people can sit on the sofa and three can sit at the bar, all facing the same way to the TV.

Anybody have an outdoor kitchen setup with wood cabinets instead of brick?

Seem simpler, more space, and should match better in my setup. Just curious if being outdoors will cause major maintenance hassle or problems.

A.) not if done right

B.) no

Also don't sink 20k into a patio on a spec house unless you plan to be there for a while. You'll never get that money back
