With all of talk last week about Cortana and Dillards finally closing up, ironically Sal dropped this video of another dead south Louisiana mall, Esplanade Mall.

Hopefully, you don’t get stuck on a 45 minute YouTube commercial like someone posted about yesterday.

Sal’s Tour of Esplanade Mall

I like his series. I wonder if he ever made it to Southland mall in Houma. The Sears wing is dead and has been dying since Sears closed up shop.

I used to get my parents to drive there and drop me off so I can visit the arcade.

I've been following Sal for years. I haven't seen him mention Southland. He did do Northshore Square.

I drove by SLM the other day. Can’t believe it’s still open and viable.

Was more shocked that Ground Patty was still there.

I really like his series because he goes into detail telling you a history of each mall, and tells you why it is failing or succeeding. He even throws in some historical commercials or photos of the malls he features.

Southland and Houma would be a good retail archeology story as it shows how a mall moved downtown Houma chain stores like Woolworths, JCPenny’s, and Sears from downtown to the mall. Then Kmart and then Walmart started to impact the mall but not kill it.

Then Walmart and Service Merchandise build new store fronts on a new road called Martin Luther King Boulevard. Lowe’s moves in. Home Depot moves in. Lowe’s builds another store to expand the store they just built.

Meanwhile, downtown dies a slow death as department stores like Duponts get shuttered by the late 90s. I was surprised Earl Williams Men’s Clothing store finally closed up shop just after the start of the new year.

There are a few other stores that I can barely recollect that would be a great history of retailing in the Houma area. Another part of the story is how some local businesses have been able to fend off the national chains like Rouses and become a retail growing giant in their own right.

In the late 80's and through the 90's, I thought The Esplanade was the nicest mall in the city. I would go out of my way to go there rather than Lakeside.

I think that the reason Lakeside "won" is simply because of location. Lakeside is in the middle of everything and has the best location in the region given that any mall in Orleans Parish will turn into a crime infested zoo, e.g., The Plaza.

They make a pretty darn good burger imo, Southland has been 'dead' for years but Ground Pati seems good to go

Right up there is the Slidell mall.

It was never a great one compared to Cortana or Esplanade, but solid enough to give many years of good memories.

It is now essentially completely dead except for a few anchor stores, yet is still open access last I saw. So you can still go in and walk through the mall passing all the now-closed up stores. I think people, especially senior citizens, go there for walking exercise. Very bizarre.

I've always wanted to play racquetball down that wing toward the old movie theater. It would make for a great court.

No doubt location is huge but sounds like the owners/managers being very aggressive and updating, expanding and bringing in new business, etc has been a huge component as well.

I went to the Southland Mall a year ago for the first time in probably 10 years.

The bright, clean, new H&M looks so out of place in there. It just overall seems dirty and depressing now.

So many memories there growing up. It’s sad to see it now.

Esplanade still looks pretty nice with a decent amount of traffic for a "dead mall"

It ain't no Cortana

As a kid, I was an Esplanade mallrat. We would ride our bikes there, play in the arcade, check out the pretty girls, grab some lunch at Dante's pizza...

Its a shame kids today can't experience the greatness that was 80s/90s mall culture.
