He isn't saying that the kid shouldn't have put himself in the situation.
He's saying that the allegation the kid did something illegal (taking the poster) in North Korea should be taken with a grain of salt.
The kid may have been a model tourist on a trip he shouldn't have taken, and the NKs wanted a show trial so they invented a crime. That is what he's getting at.

Indeed it did. Ultimately his downfall.

Here ya go...
Article containing info re: CCTV footage
You know they aren't going to let Americans stay anywhere that isn't COMPLETELY under surveillance.

I just thought this was already assumed.

Ya, they bug every thing there.
Interestingly enough, as far as I know, anyone who has stayed on the straight and narrow has gone in and out of NK without issue.
But that doesn't exactly make me feel like going, though it would be a cool trip. Your best bet is probably to go as media with one of the big outfits.
Good thing most of the weird stuff you can use Google Earth to see pics of all the monuments and stuff.

Kind of makes you wonder what kind of people would take a damn trip to North Korea.
It's kind of like those hikers who "accidentally' crossed into Iran and got arrested. There are plenty of other places to travel in the world that don't want to kill Americans.
Here's a news flash to all the free love and nickel beer college students...it's a big old mean world out there and bad shite happens.

It's a sad situation and my thoughts and prayers are with his family. As was said in their statement, I am glad they got him back home before he died and he got home at all.
With that being said, I am South Korean, at least partially and I can not understand why on earth you would go to NK in the first place. I am not in anyway saying he deserved what happened, and have just as much distain for those that did this as anyone. You have to limit your risks, he had to know something bad was possible right?

you probably should know better than to frick around in NK - especially as an American.
Henry Rollins did it with no problem. Dennis Rodman too.
I think the key is being a nineties celebrity.

If some foreigner tried to steal the Declaration of Independence I'm sure yalld want him to get beat up like what happened to this kid

You idiots who post stories without links are as bad as news organizations who leak stories without sources.
Of course, anyone who relies on TD as an official source of news is a jackass anyway

I agree it seems laughable, but I read it described somewhere else online that Kim Jung Un is basically a "deity" and that any likeness of him is basically considered him. So if you deface a poster, in NK they view that as defacing him.
In american with freedom of speech that's a laughable idea, but I can see that being very serious in tons of other countries.

Sure. But this was more like stealing a picture of the word "Preamble" off a wall in a hotel.

Trump is basically like that here, think how many red blooded Americans got pissed when Kathy griffin took that picture, and Trumps approval rating is only 57%!
Kim Jong uns approval rating is over 100% so obviously the north Korean people were hurt and offended when someone tried to steal one of their national treasures

I'm sorry that this happened to him but I don't think we should be investing blood or treasure to get someone like that out of a completely avoidable scenario. Just like those American hikers that thought it was a supremely intelligent decision to hike the Iran/Iraq border while a fricking war was going on. Those people knew the risks as well but decided to go anyway. I don't want to invest blood and treasure in their release either.
The fact that death was a possibilty is what made it exciting. I wouldn't want to rob that from future thrill seekers.
