Sadly not a shock. I assume his doctor determined he was brain dead and ceased life saving measures. This whole thing is bull shite.

I thought this was well known. He was on a tour while on a college trip to some other country out there, right?

I think he was in a student program of some sort. That's what I've gathered over the past few days.

He was on a trip with his school to China and took a group detour to NK for tourism.

Sad story, but you probably should know better than to frick around in NK - especially as an American.
You can't really even believe what crimes North Korea says the guy did. They could be making it up entirely

While there, he defaced a North Korean political sign. They were definitely triggered.

Could this be the catalyst for the imminent war between us?
I would hope not. He went voluntarily, tried to steal propaganda, and got busted in probably the worst possible country for something like that. It's an incredibly unfortunate situation but not worth going to war over.

They may very well be but all Americans need to just stay out of that shithole.
There's no "cultural" purpose to be served and there's no point in taking the risk that Kim Jong Nutjob picks your day to make some political point.

frick North Korea. It is astonishing that that government is allowed to exist. They are the greatest stain upon the earth right now. I'm disgusted. Say what you will about being dumb for traveling there but what that nation did to him and in complete secrecy is a complete atrocity.

He tried to steal it and bring it back as a souvenir. Allegedly.

I don't want to war with them, but if Kim Jong Un was the victim of suicide by two shots to the back of the head I think we'd all be better off.

Maybe but just going off the last 3, it seems like the inbred frickers get crazier with each new generation.

What is interesting is, while we cannot believe the North Koreans that what they allege actually happened, I still find it insightful that if they made up the allegation. That this was the allegation they came up with, as if it was the most "sane" allegation they could make, is somewhat humorous.

You mean to tell me this guy didn't know that being put in that scenario was a very real and distinct possibility before he went there?
I'm sorry that this happened to him but I don't think we should be investing blood or treasure to get someone like that out of a completely avoidable scenario.
Just like those American hikers that thought it was a supremely intelligent decision to hike the Iran/Iraq border while a fricking war was going on. Those people knew the risks as well but decided to go anyway. I don't want to invest blood and treasure in their release either.

I think they may have caught him on security vid...or a video one of Otto's friends made.

Ya, I haven't seen any evidence of such video or if his friend admitted to it being made. I guess I could google it.
But if all we have is the NK's saying he did the crime, well, I think we should be dubious of that.
Though a part of me doesn't doubt that is what happened, because that is exactly what I would think a college kid would do, and the response is what I expect out of a nutjob.
